Recently, developer John Heaton, also known as @gojohnnyboi on Twitter, has released the first public preview of his newest jail breaking tweak, Abstergo. This is a ridiculously simple tweak which will allow users to do something they have desperately wanted to do since the inception of iOS 5: clear all of their lock screen notification alerts with one simple action, all at once. This might not sound like a very intensive tweak, and that’s because it isn’t: it’s elegant, and simple: something that frankly, is surprising that Apple had not incorporated into their own iOS on release. This tweak represents the essence of what it is to jailbreak, and take control of your iDevice. It represents perfectly what the jail breaking community is about in terms of ingenuity and innovation. Despite many people’s claims, most recently in U.S. Congress, that jail breaking is simply a way to allow a user to obtain copyrighted material and intellectual properties (i.e., “apps”) for free by pirating them, the heart and soul of jail breaking in the first place has always been about taking control of what your iDevice is and is not capable of achieving. To change or even remove the limitations that Apple places on the hardware that you purchased and legally own. And by releasing this elegantly simple tweak, Mr. Heaton has done an exemplary job of displaying that desire to constantly improve on an already uniquely enjoyable user experience. Kudos to him.

While not very much is known about this tweak, Abstergo, John has released the first ever public preview as we mentioned above in the form of a video that was linked to via his Twitter account. The exact tweet is as follows:

Here’s the first ever public video demonstration of Abstergo for iOS 5! (Note: it isn’t done yet, subject to change)gojohnnyboi.com/projects/Abste…

— John Heaton (@Gojohnnyboi) February 2, 2012

Please feel free to shoot @gojohnnyboi a tweet and let him know what you think of the videos, and offer up suggestions, etc. And until then, if you simply just want to view the video, then click here. I know I’ll be keeping on eye on the progress, and so should you. This is going to be a simple yet ridiculously useful one, people. As always, we’ll keep you updated.

There has been many a tweak released in Cydia since the iPhone 4S Jailbreak was released, but a much anticipated one just saw the light of day and it’s name is MyAssistant.

I have been waiting for MyAssistant to be released for a few days now and jumped straight on it when it got released in Cydia. The tweak is available from the BigBoss repo for just 99c and offers a number of different customisation tools for Siri.

The tweak before release went by the name of MySiri. It offers the ability to build custom questions and answers (up to 10) so that you can have a bit of fun with Siri. Other things on offer are things such as Siri now being able to turn off toggles, launch custom activations and launch apps.

The powerful part of MyAssistant is that the user is able to type their own phrase into the settings, for instance a user could choose to say “Bluetooth on” or “Turn on Bluetooth” and the tweak will do the same thing.

However on using MyAssistant there seems to be some bugs still in it.

When setting your phrase to launch an app or turn on/off a toggle you have to make sure that the correct capitalisation is used e.g. Bluetooth on will turn on Bluetooth while Bluetooth On will not (notice the capital ‘O’ in On)

Another problem that members of the MyGreatiPhone team have noticed is that when trying to launch an App with MyAssistant nothing happens other that the status bar disappears and the springboard freezes. To sort this out you have to lock and then unlock your device, once you have done that the App will then launch.

My opinion on MyAssistant is that it really could be a powerful tweak for Siri, but while these bugs remain it just feels unfinished. For the time being I would wait before you go out and buy it and use AssistantExtensions (free in Cydia) instead.

Since the iPhone 4S Jailbreak tweaking Siri has been the main game for developers, whether it be changing the Siri background or making Siri tweet for you. But now it seems there may be a new tweak in town that will destroy the others. MySiri should be coming soon to the Cydia store.

MySiri will cost 0.99c and be available soon from the BigBoss Repo (hopefully the end of the week).

The tweak is a collaboration between Andrea Oliva & Akhil Tolani and offers some great and powerful features.

MySiri will be able to open Apps, perform commands such as locking your device and rebooting, toggling setting switches, allowing you to create your own conversations (this could be really fun) and even use your voice as an Activator to perform certain actions.

Check out the vid by idownloadblog that got an early preview…

Click here to view the embedded video.

If this tweak turns out to be able to do all the things mentioned above I personally can’t wait to spend my 99c to have a play with it. This could be the only Siri tweak that you may ever need.

iOS jail breaking is nothing new. It was first announced soon after the original Apple iPhone became available in July 2007, thanks to an enterprising hacker named George “Geohotz” Hotz, and soon a jailbreak-only game application became available. In October 2007, the first ever jailbreak tool had become available called ‘JailbreakMe‘ 1.0 (also called “AppSnapp” back in the day) which allowed people to jailbreak iPhone OS 1.1.1 on both the iPhone and iPod touch, and it included Installer.app as a way to install software for the jailbroken device. Cydia simply didn’t exist at that time.

Now, 2012, instead of Installer.app we had a new king of the hill, Cydia: a native iOS APT client used for finding and installing software for jailbroken iOS devices. The main reason people jailbreak is because doing so allows them to expand the feature set which has been limited by Apple and it’s App Store. Cydia has become very popular over the years with developers working hard to release new stuff into the jailbreak world such as themes, tweaks, and things that you would not imagine your iDevice was capable of otherwise.

Over the years we have had lots of jailbreak tools to grant us root access our iOS devices such as redsn0w, sn0wbreeze, PwnageTool, blacksn0w, purplera1n, and those are only the ‘popular‘ ones. There are two diffident types of jailbreak: 1) a tethered jailbreak, which requires that the device be connected to a computer each time it needs to be booted, and; 2) an untethered jailbreak, which allows the device to be powered on or rebooted without computer assistance.

Above, was a bit of history about jailbreaking your iOS device. Back on July 26th of 2010, the US government made the act of jailbreaking electronic devices legal by federal law.

Over the years we’ve been enjoying this freedom, tweaks, themes, and just putting the device in your hands and not Apple’s. But according to the EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation), we could lose that freedom this year if we don’t act now.

The EFF writes:

“Smartphones, tablets, and video game consoles are powerful computers with lots of untapped potential. Yet many of these devices are set up to run only software that’s been approved by the manufacturer. Modifying a device to run independent software – known as jailbreaking – is important to programmers, enthusiasts, and users. But jailbreaking creates legal uncertainty. Some device manufacturers claim that jailbreaking violates Section 1201 of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), which carries stiff penalties.”

The ruling handed down by the Copyright Office in 2010 is due to expire this year and the EFF is looking to convince the Office to renew the exemption. Otherwise jailbreaking falls back into a murky semi-illegal state giving device manufacturers the power to pursue legal action against jailbreakers at will.

The EFF provides this link to the Copyright Office’s comment board. The Office needs to hear why folks think that jailbreaking is so important. The EFF wants to hear you and here are a few thing you can say to let the jailbreaking world keep running as it is:

Which jailbreaking exemption are you supporting—smartphones/tablets, video game consoles, or both?

What’s your background (are you a developer, hobbyist, user, independent researcher, etc.)?

What device do you want to ensure you have the legal authority to jailbreak?

What limitations would you face if you weren’t able to jailbreak?

Comments should be marked as class “5″ and are due by 5 PM ET on February 10. MyGreatiPhone will keep you notified on the EFF’s progress, so keep checking back. Give us your thoughts below? We’d love to hear.

Recently, it has come up in conversation amongst the MGiP staff, and we all were shocked to discover that we were all experiencing the same exact issues: At exactly 10% of our battery, our iPhone 4[s] devices were shutting down, as if it were out of battery power. Then, when we tried to turn it back on, knowing full well that we had at least 10% battery left, it would not allow us to turn it back on until we plugged it in and began to charge it. At first we didn’t notice a pattern, we figured it was just one of the random reboot issues that come with the privilege of being jailbroken. Not only that, but once we started charging it, it would power on instantly, without waiting for for it to charge up to the mandatory 5%.

So, to help all of us figure out what tweak is causing the bug, we are listing all of our installed tweaks, and if you are having the same issue, and notice that you have common tweaks installed as well, then let us know!

Something important to note: while the suspect is a rogue tweak, it may also be the A5 jailbreak ITSELF. I, LVCIFER, jail broke using Absinthe for the Mac. Please contact us and let us know if you are having the same issues, and let us know what you think the suspected tweak is. Also, feel free to experiment, and add/remove tweaks until the problem stops. Either way, please keep us in the loop so that we can help others and get the word out as well.

But the one we are going to talk about now is a little different. Todays Siri tweak is Assistant Extensions and its more for developers than the normal Jailbreaker.

Assistant Extensions is designed to make it easy for developers to expand the capabilities of Siri.

The tweak has no settings but does have a couple of teasers already built it such as:

System Commands: this allows users to launch apps, send tweets and control the brightness.

Toggles: lets you set the settings toggles plus see a list of toggles and their current states.

Chat Bot: lets you chat with Siri. To start, just say “Let’s chat” and wait a moment.

Well today, Grooveshark developer Tyler Nettleton has released a hack that will let you send tweets using Siri.

According to TechCrunch, Sireet will let you speak your tweet to Siri, where it will then confirm your tweet with you and let you send it using Siri’s characteristic responses. Once the tweet has been sent, your phone will chirp out a notification and Siri will leave you a confirmation. The one downside to this does appear to be that you can not review your tweets before you can send them.

This new free Cydia app has been added to the ModMyi repository and is ready to download now.

But now there is a way to get them thanks to a Jailbreak and Ryan Petrich’s Cydia App called Belfry.

Belfy is a free tweak from Cydia on the BigBoss repo.

Ryan Petrich has managed to pull the Apps from the iPhone package them up and but them on Cydia for an easy install.

The Apps when downloaded will need to be x2 so that they fit the iPad screen but with the help of 2 other tweaks Retina Pad and FullForce they look great.

Installing the tweak from Cydia takes between 2 and around 7 minutes and requires a reboot once complete.

Check out the vid below.

Click here to view the embedded video.

So there you have it if you need these apps now there is a nice and easy way to get them.

To get this to work you will obviously need a Jailbroken device running iOS 5 (at least) with Activator installed (available from Cydia).

Head over to Settings.app – Activator – Anywhere – Pick a Gesture (personally I have it set to Hold Status Bar) – Scroll down to “Compose Tweet” under the Systems Actions header.

Now you can tweet from anywhere within iOS 5+ other than directly from the lockscreen, and you didn’t given need to buy a tweak from Cydia!

With announcements about @pod2g and his dream team working hard on making the exploit possible it seems that all eyes are firmly fixed on them.

For iPhone 4[s] users it’s been a long 3 month wait for a jailbreak and for iPad 2 users who updated to iOS 5 it has been a lengthy 7 months but it looks like there is finally light at the end of the tunnel as @pod2g announced this on his blog post…

“Here are some news about the current work on the A5 research. @planetbeing escaped from the sandbox with the help of @saurik. Thanks to their awesome work, there should be nothing left blocking for the A5 jailbreak. Now it should be a matter of days. Still no precise ETA of course. We all want this to be finished ASAP, we’re getting tired!”

This post surely shows that the ‘dream team’ has made huge progress over the last few days. It was recently reported that the hackers had cleared sandbox and resolved all of the major blocking issues but there was still no update as to when we could expect a jailbreak to be released and today @pod2g has stated that it’s only a matter of days although this is an estimate.

The team, who are still working tirelessly to get a jailbreak released, could face a lot more problems between now and a release date but this shows that they are getting ever closer to achieving their goal.

Keep checking back here for more updates as it appears that an A5 jailbreak could literally be here any day.

Not so long ago we informed you that jailbreak guru @pod2g had enlisted the help of some of the greatest developers and hackers in his quest to find the solution to his iOS 5 untethered jailbreak on A5 devices.

After getting so far by himself, @pod2g teamed up with members of both the Chronic and iPhone Dev teams to help him finalise his iOS 5 untethered jailbreak for older A4 devices. We have all seen his work implemented in the updated version of Redsn0w and through the Corona utility on Cydia, which can be used on devices already using a tethered jailbreak.

If you had an iPhone 4[s] or an iPad 2 though, you were out of luck in regards to an untethered jailbreak on your device due to the team not having the relevant exploits to inject the untethered files. In order to obtain these files the jailbreakers needed to get them from an official developers account and therefore they could not be released to the general public for everyone to enjoy.

Well it now appears that the dream team have recruited a new, famous, member with MuscleNerd tweeting that the creator of Cydia, Jay Freeman (AKA Saurik) will be lending a helping hand with the A5 version of @pod2g’s untethered jailbreak. Due to his experience in this area, he did express that he would not put an ETA on when this will happen but things are moving forward.

In another tweet @pod2g also paid thanks to another legendary hacker PlanetBeing, who has also been providing a helping hand to try and alleviate sandboxing issues which the team has been experiencing. It’s believed that his knowledge and skills may help to move this jailbreak forward than would be possible if he wasn’t involved.

As usual we will keep you posted on any more developments as they arrive.

The beta 2 version of redsn0w includes a few bugs fixes, like the launchctl-related problem founded by @planetbeing and many more to do with @Pod2g’s Untethered Jailbreak.

Update #2: The b2 version of redsn0w includes the launchctl-related fix by @planetbeing as mentioned by @saurik here and here. As usual, you can just re-run redsn0w in jailbreak mode over your existing 5.0.1 jailbreak (even a PwnageTool one), making sure to de-select “Install Cydia” if you do. Always be sure to do a controlled “slide to power off” shutdown of your device before running redsn0w.

As usual, you can re-run the latest version of redsn0w in jailbreak mode over your existing iOS 5.0.1 jailbreak, but when you do, please note: make sure you un-check the “Install Cydia” button because it will overwrite the existing Cydia install and you may have to restore your device.

Download the latest redSn0w by the following links below:

Cydia is now saving SHSH blobs for devices on iOS 5.0.1.

An iTunes tweak or custom restore tool will be eventually be released to use those blobs for downgrading to iOS 5.0.1. However there is no word on when this will be available.

For now, though, it is recommended that you contine using RedSn0w to save your SHSH blobs so that you’ll have a copy which can be used to stitch a custom ipsw.

A few weeks back, we reported that @Pod2g had uploaded a video on YouTube showing off his jailbreak project and in that video he showed of an iPod Touch 3rd Generation running on iOS5 and since then he hasn’t posted another video, until now.

Earlier today, @Pod2g posted/uploaded a video demonstrating an untethered jailbreak of iOS 5.0.1 on the iPhone 4. In the Jailbreak video he shows off the following actions:

Open Cydia and let it load

Reboots device

Open Cydia and let it load again

Click here to view the embedded video.

From pod2g’s blog post:

Hello,

Here is a new video demo of the current status of the 5.0.1 jailbreak running on an iPhone 4.

This is meant to reassure people that were thinking it only works on older iPods.

The jailbreak is nearly ready for prime time (excluding 4S and iPad 2).

Patches are the same as redsn0w’s. Expect the same level of stability.

Some more days to wait. Be patient, we’re doing our best.

We will update you as and when it is released publicly, so keep your eyes peeled. Fingers crossed we will see an untethered jailbreak soon. We will soon find out, but for now let @Pod2g get on with his life and stop asking him on twitter.

As usual you can get notified of new articles on MyGreatiPhone by following us on Twitter, liking us on Facebook, or subscribing to our RSS feed.

They’ve confirmed to their followers that their app will be available on Cydia in January, so not long to wait now!

For those that don’t know, the iTether app allows you to connect to the internet anywhere and at faster speeds than before. The app was previously available in the AppStore until it was pulled by Apple. Therefore the news from the iTether team that the app will be available on Cydia is great news.

As you already will be aware, Apple today sent live yet another version of iOS 5.0.1 specifically for the iPhone 4s only. This is allegedly supposed to address key battery issues still being experienced by many users.

This build, however, is slightly different. Normally Apple encrypts the ipsw file, meaning that decrypting and redistributing parts of it for whatever reason (extracting siri files for example) is regarded as piracy. This new build has seemingly been left wide open. MuscleNerd elaborates;

Huh…today’s 4S 5.0.1 bump (9A406) has wide open main fs musclenerd.com/4s406.txt

(to clarify: wide open for inspection from a Mac/PC…not wide open security wise Can get Siri files and such without piracy)

— MuscleNerd (@MuscleNerd) December 15, 2011

This is an obvious oversight by Apple, obvious and very unlike them.

Porting Siri is not at the top of my list of things I want to see from this as I paid to have Siri, but if it helps with furthering progress on a jailbreak then it can’t be bad.

The video shows an iPod Touch 3rd Gen jailbroken on 5.0. This comes after his announcement early last month that he had found an exploit.

Like all authentic jailbreak video demo’s, it goes like this;

Show firmware version in Settings.app

Open Cydia and let it load

Reboot device

Open Cydia and let it load again

This shows that this is an authentic untethered jailbreak.

Click here to view the embedded video.

According to pod2g his method does NOT rely on Charlie Millers code signing vulnerability found a few months back. However as this is the first public untethered jailbreak, it will be interesting to see if Apple uses the incremental update functionality to kill this straight away.

@i0n1c @0xcharlie hello. No it does not rely on it. Next step do the same on iOS 5.0.1. Should be quick.

— pod2g (@pod2g) December9, 2011

If you want this jailbreak when it is released you currently need to be on iOS 5.0, but pod2g has said it should be easy to do the same for 5.0.1 and maybe 5.1? No word yet on which devices this jailbreak will cover.

We will update you as and when it is released publicly. This news comes just as comex publicly confirmed on Twitter that he no longer works on jailbreaks, which isn’t that surprising as he recently took an internship at Apple.

You may have read the article that we did on Siri0us in regards to the ultra popular Cydia tweak that added Nuance dictation to older iPhones such as the iPhone 4, and iPhone 3G[s]. Well this tweak can no longer be found in Cydia, and I can’t say that I am surprised. Why you may ask, considering the tweak was so popular? There are a multitude of reasons why I believe this has been pulled.

Well the developer himself pulled the tweak, allegedly because after all the publicity that “Siri0us” received from various blogs, the servers used to host the tweak had repeatedly crashed in the last 48 hours due to immensely high traffic.

This is not the only reason that the tweak seems to have been pulled though, as it is also believed that Nuance refused to sell the developer rights to use their tech in his tweak. From a technical and financial standpoint, this is technology that Apple had most likely spent millions, if not billions in order to obtain rights to use. While Nuance never actually sold their company to Apple, they did reach an agreement that allowed them to use their technology in their iDevice. And while I have no intentions of putting down the developer, I would be rather shocked if he has the same size bank accounts as Apple does in order to be able to afford to use this technology legally.

In fact we mentioned, if you read through the article we had previously written on the wildly popular tweak, we mentioned that “Siri0us” was illegal when we first broke the news.

But he also put advertisements in the software he is illegally distributing. He is literally profiting from technology he does not have rights to.

While the tweak may be working for the time being for those who have managed to get it from Cydia, there is no telling how long that will last. Eric Day (the developer of “Siri0us”) has tweeted that he will be looking at other free speech-to-text alternatives. As that may not be ideal, it should also be mentioned that one of the reasons that Siri is so popular is because it “just works“. It’s dictation is almost flawless when you acclimate yourself to speaking correctly in regards to dictation. And, after trying other “Siri Alternatives” myself, such as “iriS” for the Android, and watching videos of Zypr, I have to say it: Anything else Eric Day chooses to use just wouldn’t be on Siri’s level.

As stated in the previous article, which can be viewed here, you can still find the ad-free, “pirated” version of “Siri0us” by simply googling “SiriForYou“. Feel free to leave your comments below, or contact us directly on Twitter!

Aside from the “Dark Knight” pun referenced in the header, this is anything but serious, this is amazing. It seems that now, every time I turn around, there is a new hack or tweak being released in regards to Siri. Just tonight alone, there have been three Siri-related posts on MyGreatiPhone.com, and I have a feeling this isn’t going to be stopping any time soon.

What can be said about Siri that hasn’t been said before? You know what it is. You know what it does. You know what limitations it has. Well, maybe you don’t know as much as you think you do. For example, as of tonight, November 27, 2011, did you know that some pretty important features of Siri are working on older iDevices, such as the iPhone 4, and the iPhone 3G[s]? Yeah. Exactly. The hack I am talking about is called “Siri0us”, and it can be found in Cydia. What it does, is it basically brings the “dictation” aspect of Siri to the older devices, allowing you to start talking now, instead of typing. This is the feature of Siri I have mostly used since I got my hands on my iPhone 4[s], because it literally eliminates the need to type, if you properly know how to speak to Siri, and use proper verbal dictation methods. It truly is a “game changer” in regards to how you use your iDevice. You can view an article I have previously written about this here.

While I might not be enthusiastic about porting Siri over to older iDevices, I can’t help but like the fact that so many people are putting in the time and effort to customizing what Siri can do. Developer Eric Day, also known as @smartype on twitter, has released this tweak, and as to be expected on “buggy” software (the original Siri port), there are some things you should look out for, but I’ll get into that in a second. First things first, here is how you can get it: You have to add a source repo in Cydia. You do that by going into Cydia, and tapping on “Manage”, then tap on “Sources”. After that, you tap on “Edit” in the upper right corner, then “Add” in the upper left. Then, you simply type in the repo address, in this case, http://apt.if0rce.com (with a zero, not an “o”), and let it populate. Voila, the hard part is over, now, you just look for and install “Siri0us”, and enjoy, because it IS damned awesome to have the ability to talk to your device now. You will also need to always be connected to the internet somehow for the Siri microphone to show up, so you’ll need either a 3G or Wifi connection for this to work, Edge simply won’t cut it.

AUTHOR’S NOTE: “Siri0us” is ad-supported. However, there is a way to download it ad-free. This has caused a rather interesting debate amongst the authors and editors of MGiP, especially in regards to how legal this is. You can read below in the disclaimer about the legal issues going on. Eric Day successfully got this working, and brought it out to people. But he also put advertisements in the software he is illegally distributing. He is literally profiting from technology he does not have rights to. Someone else out there created a version of “Siri0us” that was ad-free. Since we do not condone piracy, we have removed that link, however, it begs the question “Is stealing from a thief morally wrong?” Robbing Eric of his right to earn money from something that isn’t his seems fair to me, but we will be sticking to our “anti-piracy” guns on this one. You can find the ad-free version by conducting a simple google search for “SiriForYou“.

PLEASE NOTE: As with all tweaks, we are simply relaying information that you may find useful. You do this at your own discretion, and hold no blame on any of the staff of MyGreatiPhone.com for providing this information to you. You assume all risk that potential damage may occur to your iDevice. Another thing you should know is that this program is technically illegal. By that, the Dictation function does not rely on Apple’s servers, or obtaining any UDID keys, but it does rely on Nuance’s dictation technology, of which Developer Eric Day does not have any licenses to distribute with his tweak, and he has not been given the right to distribute their software/technology legally. So go into this with your eyes open.

And speaking of risk, let me close with the issues that users have experienced. While the vast majority of users will not experience any issues, the one issue that I have been hearing has been an “infinite respring loop”. Do not fret! There is no reason to panic! You simply connect your iDevice to your computer – DO NOT RESTORE – and open up your SSH program of choice. Locate this file: /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/AssistantServices.framework, and you delete it. It will respring, and now you can experience the best part of Siri. Have fun, and happy tweaking.

A few weeks back we reported that a untethered JailBreak was coming to iOS5 (more info Here), Today @Pod2g has announced on Twitter that the bug discovered by Charlie Miller will make creating a jailbreak easier, but that Apple is probably aware of the issue and will likely patch it in iOS 5.0.1 so if you want the untethered jailbreak then when iOS 5.0.1 comes don’t update. Keep in mind, @pod2g has also discovered a bug which differs from the one that Miller discovered, but for obvious reasons, neither will be disclosed at the current time.

@Pod2g said the following on Twitter;

Note about 5.0.1 : don’t update if you plan on jbking : the bug Charlie MILLER found can simplify exploits dramatically and will be closed.

We haven’t got any information about when the untethered jailbreak is going to be released, so please don’t ask. @Pod2g doesn’t know either. No ETA has been given for a reason.

Recently iH8sn0w updated his very popular jailbreak tool called Sn0wbreeze to version 2.8 beta 9. In this update it now supports iOS 5.0.1 beta 1 (9A402) and also fixes the iBooks sandbox and location services issue with the iPhone 3GS.

This update blocks the Developer UDID and the beta timer so this means that you can have iOS 5.0.1 beta 1 on your device without the need to be a registered developer to install it.

Here is the change log for Sn0wbreeze v2.8b9:

Supports iOS 5.0 (9A334)/5.0.1-b1 (9A402)

Fixed iBooks sandbox crashing issues.

Fixed location services issues with iPhone 3GS

Re-added iPad baseband install option to iPhone 3GS.

Removes UDID requirement/beta timer in 5.0.1.

Tethered devices are booted via iBooty which is extracted to the Desktop after running Sn0wBreeze

This jailbreak is still a tethered jailbreak for all devices but if you have an iPhone 3GS old bootrom then it is untethered. For all of you tethered users, install the semitether jailbreak app by BigBoss (more info here, and make sure you read it before you download) and this is not for the iPhone 4S or the iPad 2 so keep away.

You can download Sn0wbreeze v2.8 beta 9 from the following link http://mygre.at/h4 and don’t forget that this is a Windows program and not for Mac.

Happy Jailnreaking!

You updated to iOS5.0.1 on your iDevice but miss the jailbreak (if you where running a jailbreak) well, recently the Dev-Team updated its famous jailbreaking Tool redsnow to version 0.9.9 beta 8, this update brings along compatibility with the just released to Developers iOS 5.0.1 beta 1.

Also, if your an unlocker who owns an iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4 and want to update while preserving your baseband, the Mac version (Not windows for now) will allow you to do it, but as the site say that ultrasn0w doesn’t get updated for betas like this, and will not be updated until iOS 5.0.1 comes out.

Redsn0w version 0.9.9b8 will natively recognize the 5.0.1 beta that Apple let developers start testing this week (so you don’t have to play the “point at 5.0 IPSW” trick). Because the IPSW isn’t public, you’ll still need to provide it once to redsn0w (at which point it will cache all the important pieces so you don’t need to select it again).

For those 3GS and i4 users who preserve their baseband, the Mac version can also produce the NO_BB_* custom IPSWs for 5.0.1. (But please note that ultrasn0w doesn’t get updated for betas like this.)

This jailbreak is still a tethered but if you have an iPhone 3GS old bootrom, or the you installed the semitether jailbreak app, it will not work with the iPhone 4S and the iPad 2.

You can download redsn0w for windows and Mac at the following links below:

Terminal was first introduced on the Mac platform and in fact, it has been since Mac OSX was announced. Terminal allows you to type commands in to your computer to perform command-line tasks, for example changing permissions for a specific file quickly. That may sound very strange, but it’s actually really, really nice and easy once you get used to it. Thanks to Cydia it came over to the Mobile platform (for commands you need to look it up).

Mobile Terminal was very, very useful if your Cydia was not working but unfortunately, the version that is still in Cydia has gone without an update for quite some time now, rendering it unusable on recent iOS firmwares.

To enable it and complete the steps below you will need to be jailbroken and it also helps if you have iFile as well.

Follow the steps below (credit goes to iDownloadblog.com for breaking the story)

How to Install Mobile Terminal on iOS 5

Step 1: Verify that you have CoreUtilities installed in Cydia. If not, you will receive a dependency error when trying to install Mobile Terminal. To verify, open Cydia and tap the Manage tab. In the upper left-hand corner tap the Settings button. Select Hacker Mode and tap done. Tap the Search tab, and search for “coreutils”. You should see Core Utilities and Core Utilities (/bin). You want to make sure that the first Core Utilities is installed on your device (not the bin, as that should already be installed upon initial Cydia installation).

Step 2: Open Mobile Safari and download the Mobile Terminal.deb file from the following Google Code repository. Then choose open with iFile in the upper right-hand corner. You must have iFile installed.

Step 3: Once iFile loads, a pop up menu will appear. Select “Installer” from the menu and it will install Mobile Terminal.

Step 4: Respring or Reboot, and you should have a working Mobile Terminal for iOS 5 (it should also work on iOS 4 as well).

Mobile Terminal is good to use for tons of things. You can even respring your device directly from a terminal if you wish by typing: killall SpringBoard

I hope this help you. MyGreatiPhone takes no responsibility for any issues caused by performing the steps above as you do this at your own risk.

Please leave your comments below and share it with your friends.

If you’re jailbreaken on an iOS5 iDevice, you may have been faced with some problems with the Apple iBooks app. This is a known issue, and there is no need to panic, but since the Steve Jobs biography was released recently, this is the first time that many iOS users had even attempted to use iBooks, and until this point, they had not even been aware that there was anything wrong with it.

Recently a well-known jailbreak developer, @iH8sn0w, who is famous for such tools as sn0wbreeze, iREB, iFaith and other similar tools, has been hard at work to fix this problem with iBooks. He has posted a video showing iBooks on a jailbroken iPod Touch running iOS 5, but he said that this fix will not be released for public since it’s not yet stable.

As you can see below, the iBooks opens normally without any crashes.

Click here to view the embedded video.

To be able to follow the steps below, your device must be jailbroken on iOS 5 and have the iFile application from Cydia installed on your iDevice. It is a Paid tweak but its worth it.

Follow the steps below (credit goes to iDownloadblog.com for breaking the story)

Step 1: Uninstall iBooks, and then reinstall iBooks from the App Store. Do not open the app.

Step 2: Open iFile, and copy iBooks.app from /var/mobile/Applications/(iBook’s folder)/ to /Applications. You can use SBSettings, or just go through each folder to identify the correct iBooks folder. If you don’t have a lot of App Store apps, this should be simple.

Step 3: Tap on /Applications/iBooks.app/Info.plist and select property list editor. Tap CFBundleIdentifier and change com.apple.iBooks to com.apple.iBooksFix

Step 4: Exit iFile and Respring.

Step 5: Delete the original iBooks app (rounded corners) and keep the square iBooks app.

Step 6: Since you can’t use the iBookstore on device, and you can’t sync with iTunes, upload your .epub files using the methods outlined on the video, dropbox, etc. From there you can open them using iBooks where you will be able to read them.

Please note that there might be some problems with ibooks but at lest its something.

theys are some of the problems:

The iBooks icon will not be rounded rectangle. Instead, it will be a circle icon. Howoever, it can be fixed by correcting the png files

You won’t be able to sync iBooks store with iTunes and no purchases on the device.

Please let us no how it works.

As of yet there has been no untethered jailbreak for iOS 5 unless you have been running an old bootrom 3GS.

The difference between a tethered Jailbreak and an untethered one is that a tethered jailbreak requires you to be connected to a computer to boot your iPhone up (hence the tethered part), while an untethered one doesn’t.

Now it seems Bigboss has done something that is kind on in-between a tethered and untethered Jailbreak and he has named it Semitethered.

Now a semi-tethered Jailbreak is is the same as a tethered one needing you to boot your iPhone from a computer in order for it to work properly. The difference with this one is that if for any reason you need to reboot your phone while you are out and not near a computer you will be able to – BUT you will not be able to use all its features until you boot it again while connected to Redsn0w.

To install Semitether you need to already be Jailbroken and you need to add the following repo to Cydia: http://thebigboss.org/semitether

There is one thing though; when you install this you will have to reboot so don’t get installing it while your out and about.

There has been an update to this package during the night which should have sorted out a few problems for you here is the change log:

1) Device does not sync with itunes and only errors. Hopefully solved.
2) Device reboots after 2-3 minutes.
3) App sync issue – this is unworkable. Appsync hard patches system files and does not even use mobile substrate. I had to conflict with it. For now, semi-tether boot is impossible with appsync. You guys need to bug those guys to fix appsync to use mobile substrate (like everyone else uses).

Now remember I said that if you had to reboot when using Semitethered there where some things that you wouldn’t be able to use here is the list of things you can and can’t do:

) Can use phone, sms (text messages)
2) Can use every other stock app on iphone.
3) Cannot use mobile safari
4) Can use other appstore web browsers such as atomic web browser
5) Cannot use mail app. You could install a gmail app from appstore or such instead.
6) You cannot use any jailbreak tweak, app, cydia until you boot tethered.
7) While in the semitether booted state, you should not add a jailbreak ios5 notification such as sbsettings to notifications during this state or your device will be stuck in a respring loop until you get home to “boot tethered”.

So there you have it, if you install Semitether and you need to reboot at least you will be able to use you phone to phone and message people.

Remember though this will NOT work on the iPhone 4S or the iPad 2!!

Today the Dev-Team accounnced a huge update to their Redsn0w Tool (Redsn0w 0.9.9 beta 7), before this update was released it took around about 210 seconds, this is due to the fact that RedSn0w spent a lot of time “stashing” applications on your device.

Now after the feedback on reddit the Dev-Team decided something about the length of time for the Jailbreak to work because now it takes around about 80 seconds (60% faster) to do the whole process (WOW).

“After some feedback on reddit, we’ve decided to make the initial jailbreak as quick as possible by no longer “stashing” the applications by default during the redsn0w run. This reduces the time to actually perform the jailbreak from 210 seconds to 80 seconds (60 percent!). However, you make up for much of that the first time you launch Cydia, which will then want to stash the applications. You can choose whether you want redsn0w or Cydia to stash in the Preferences pane.”

When Apple releases a firmware, big or small, developers alike, whether it is a AppStore developer or a Cydia developer, need to update their releases to bring them up-to-date and make them compatible with the current firmware. If they don’t, then the iDevices they are installed on may not work properly, and may cause you to require a restore to fix the problems. Well, a well known Cydia developer named @chpwn started updating all of his jailbreaking tweaks from Cydia in order to make them all compatible with iOS 5.

Here’s some info for you if you’re having any issues or problems from using the tweaks released by @chpwn:

Feel free to send me a support email from Cydia if you have any issues or questions, for paid products. I try and respond within a few hours if I’m not sleeping.

Here’s a list of @chpwn’s tweaks, and updates which tell you which are compatible or not compatible with iOS5, as well as their current status:

Paid Extensions

Gridlock: Full iOS 5 support.
VoiceActivator: Full iOS 5 support.
Infinidock: Does not work. Development status: investigating best way to upgrade.
Infiniboard: Does not work. Development status: basic functionality works, but buggy.
Infinifolders: Does not work. Development status: basic functionality works, but buggy.

Free Extensions

IconSupport: Full iOS 5 support. (Via @ashikase, who did the iOS 5 work: thanks!)
Webscrollian: Full iOS 5 support.
No Page Dots: Full iOS 5 support.
MobileVolumeSound: Full iOS 5 support.
No Bookmarks: Full iOS 5 support.
Five Icon Switcher: Full iOS 5 support.
Full WebClips: Full iOS 5 support.
Internalizer: Full iOS 5 support.
No Folder Badges: Full iOS 5 support.
Empty Folder Icons: Unknown. Let me know?
Colloquy Tab Complete: Unknown. Let me know?
Covert: Does not work, but similar functionality is included in iOS 5.
ListLauncher: Does not work.
Switcherscape: Does not work.
AppSlide: Does not work.

I may or may not be updating this but @chpwn himself is updating it day by back here.

At the top is just @chpwn’s tweaks, but I have also found a full list of compatible Cydia tweaks from here, you can also edit the list via Google Docs, if necessary.

I do, that was the first tweak/mod I ever installed on my iDevice, in I have been jailbreaking my devices since firmware 2.2.1.

The famous jailbreak mod SBSettings by BigBoss now Supports iOS5, although it is still classed as beta and intended for developers. One of the big features for me is that it now supports Notification Center, one of the biggest features in iOS5.

IOS5 will be available to the public this Wednesday the 12th of October, if you haven’t checked out SBSettings before then you are missing out.

This is what the developer said;

I have a lot of big changes coming to SBSettings for iOS5. For those of you on iOS5 already that want to test it, I should be releasing daily beta updates for it.

Some of the big features in SBSettings;

● Notification center integration
● Your choice of using the old style window or the notification center. Or both.
● You choose which toggles to appear in notification and window sections.
● Current sbsettings toggles should be supported. Current themes should work in notification area as well.
● You get to choose what will show up in notification section.

To get the Beta iOS 5 version of SBSettings add the following repo to Cydia: http://thebigboss.org/ios5beta

Like I said this is really for developers but if you want to try it go ahead but if your experience issues don’t blame the developer or US.

What do you think? Please leave a comment below. Enjoy!

Cydia the Jailbreaker’s AppStore saw an update today that changed a few things.

For those of you that have used Cydia for a while you may have noticed that there has been a section on the homepage entitled “Upgrading to 4.0.2?” This has now been updated to “Upgrading and Jailbreaking Help”. This new section will keep Jailbreakers up to date on how to stay Jailbroken on their firmware.

The second part of the homepage that has seen an update is the ”Root Password How-To” section. This is now been updated and fixed.

Its good to see that Cydia is not just getting left to go stale at all and that the Cydia team are continuously improving the “App” both behind the scenes and inside the app.

Cydia has been around for a long time now and houses some amazing tweaks. Most users who jailbreak just find what they need and download, not giving a second thought as to where the packages come from. Well recently ModMyi added a new feature to their repo that allows the unsung heroes, aka the developers behind these amazing tweaks, to be listed with links and a list of their work.

So far the directory only lists developers that post their work within the ModMyi repo, but we are hoping that eventually it will be adopted by the other major repos, or even integrated into the Cydia interface itself.

The directory not only helps the developers to get the credit they deserve but it helps the user by making it easy to find the best tweaks by their favourite developers.

Below are some images of the directory;

As you can see each developer listing shows a brief bio, social links and web links and a list of all their work. Those brave enough can even display a picture of themselves like Ryan Petrich above (Not sure who the guy in the background is pulling his strings though ;P).

According to Mashable there is a bug in the latest version of Skype that allows users to steal your data. This is a cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability.

Skype is aware of this and told the customers this following statement:

We are working hard to fix this reported issue in our next planned release which we hope to roll out imminently. In the meantime we always recommend people exercise caution in only accepting friend requests from people they know and practice common sense internet security as always.

Take a look at the hack being Demoed.

Another week has passed and this brings along with it another MyGreatiPhone weekly round up, covering all the latest and important news in the idevice world. Lets get down to business.

• The biggest news this week has to be that Casemate have confirmed that there will be new iDevices out within weeks. Casemate are one of the biggest if not the biggest case companies, them stating that the new devices will be coming soon does come with a lot of credit as they are definitely in the know. Read the full article here

• Also this week it has been reported that Apple will hold a media event on October 5th. This supports most of the rumors floating around about the potential October release dates of the new iDevice. There is also a possibility of a new iPod being released also. Read the full article here

• In jailbreak news this week Musclenerd one of the biggest names in the jailbreak world has announced a major update for Redsn0w due very soon. Catch the full article that has all the details here

• Have you ever wondered if it is possible to have the Apple logo light up on your iPhone 4 like it does on macs? If so you need ponder no more, this awesome tweek has been made by a company named iPatch who normally just repair iPods and iPhones. You really do have to see it to believe it, it is one of the greatest mods done to any phone. Catch the original article and the pictures here

• This week MyGreatFest was held, the biggest announcement to come from the jailbreak event came from members of the Chronic-Dev-Team. They have reportedly found a user land exploit (Like jailbreakme) for iOS 5. This will be one to keep an eye on for when iOS 5 is available to the public. Read the original article with all the details here

• This week Tweet deck one of the most popular Twitter clients removed the Deck.ly tweet-longer feature, reasons why were given but still why remove one of the best features? Read the full article here

• In other social networking news this week, Facebook Messenger has been made available (finally) worldwide. The app has been available for a few weeks in the US only, the main reason Facebook gave for the reason for not releasing in the UK was because of the riots, but what about the rest of the world? Read the original article here

• This week it was spotted by our very own Nazaroth that apple may be “faking” their iPhone adverts. It seems they may have been adding review counts and scores that are not true or accurate confusing people, only a good eye would have noticed this that is why Nazaroth was on the case. Read the full article here

• Another rumor began circling this week, it was said that iOS5 Beta 8 was due to be released on Friday 16th of september. If you’re reading this now you realize that this has already passed as I have written this, proving that not all rumors are 100% true. But they also have reported a possible release date for the GM version of iOS 5. Read the full article here

Thats all the news for this week, whilst we sit and wait patiently for Apple to announce any new iDevices please enjoy our new articles on the homepage and read my weekly round up available every sunday.

Well, late last night MuscleNerd (Jailbreak Developer) updated the Dev-Team blog with the New RedSnow which is in Beta stage (Beta 1), you can read the release notes below;

• uses DFU mode to try to automatically determine which device and FW you have
• fetches pieces of public IPSWs from Apple (once). Non-public IPSWs must be provided manually (once). It then caches those pieces for future use.

• “Just boot” is a tethered boot. Uses whatever “Preferences” you’ve set for boot logo and kernel boot-args

• “Pwned DFU” puts your device in a pwned DFU state for some of the iTunes stuff detailed below

• “Recovery fix” gets past 1015 types of errors (when baseband portion of restore fails). Should work on iOS5 beta too

• “Select IPSW” is for picking non-public IPSWs, or overriding auto-detection

•“SHSH blobs” has a bunch of options…

• “Fetch” – fetch current PARTIAL blobs on device. Should complete in under 10 or 15 seconds. Puts the set of PARTIAL of blobs on your computer as a plist. Checks if Cydia already has a full set for this device and build. If not, it submits this PARTIAL set and returns Cydia’s acknowledgement or rejection

• ”Verify” - cryptographically verifies existing blob files from either redsn0w, TinyUmbrella, or Cydia server. You can select a whole bunch of blobs to verify at once if you want (like the TinyUmbrella directory)

• “Submit” - both verifies and submits one or more blob files to Cydia. This lets you copy your entire TinyUmbrella cache of blobs up to the Cydia server

• ”Query” – queries the Cydia server for all available FULL or PARTIAL blobs for a given set of ECIDs

• “Stitch” – stitches either FULL or PARTIAL blobs to a STOCK or CUSTOM IPSW

1. FULL blobs stitched to a STOCK IPSW gives you a completely self-contained signed IPSW that iTunes will accept without any tricks (no need to go into pwned DFU mode, no need to start TinyUmbrella TSS server, no need to redirect to Cydia server for blobs).

2. PARTIAL blobs stitched to any IPSW requires you to go into pwned DFU mode before running iTunes. No need to start TU or use Cydia though.

3. stitching either FULL or PARTIAL blobs to a CUSTOM IPSW also requires a pwned DFU start before iTunes restores. No need to start TU or use Cydia though.

4. stitching is NOT yet supported on iPhones (well, at least not tested). Need to work out the baseband part of the restore process.

5. will eventually support fetching the blobs directly from Cydia instead of a file on your computer.

Please remember that This RedSn0w is in beta and is only meant for developers.

RedSn0w 0.9.9b1 is now available for both Mac and Windows.

What do you think of this New RedSn0w? Please leave your thoughts below.

Today MuscleNerd (Jailbreak Developer) has announced on Twitter that he will be doing a major update to the famous Jailbreak tool called Redsn0w.

This what he Said on twitter

Will be pushing out a major redsn0w feature upgrade before my trip to Korea: http://is.gd/PMAdT1 (and look, no IPSW selection button!)

To Jailbreak your iDevice using Redsn0w you need to download Redsn0w then download the iPSW (Firmware) for your Device then point it at your specific device THEN put it into DFU mode (Got a headache all ready and i haven’t finished yet ) then wait until RedSn0w does it’s thing.

Well, in this update you do not need to point at an IPSW and also lets users submit SHSH blobs to Cydia, also some UI changers

The updated version of Redsn0w will be released as early as Monday. We will let you know about it as soon as it is available!

You might of seen a review awhile back called Are you Russian and want Cydia but can’t get it?, that tweak will allow you to change the English language in Cydia to Russian language.

Recently a Developer (Arash Amini) has worked hard to put together a package called 5-Row Russian keyboard which allows users to have a 5 rows on the iOS keyboard instead of the standard keyboard and have the language as Russian.

5-Row Russian Keyboard is a paid tweak it is $2 which is a Good Deal if you are Russian, and the Tweak is Available via the BigBoss Repo

To get this to work all you need to do is to install Winterboard and 5-Row Russian Keyboard in Cydia on to your iDevice (apart from the iPad),use Winterboard to apply the 5-Row Russian keyboard theme then apply the keyboard by going to Settings > General > international > Keyboards > and choose’s the 5Row-Russian or choose the Black one.

There is a iPad version which is called 5-Row Russian iPad Keyboard in Cydia for the same price and it is the same setup as I just said.

See the iPad image Below.

Another week has passed and as always a week passing brings the MyGreatiPhone weekly round up, this will include all news from the iDevice world that really needs to be read so lets get started

• This week Apple released iOS 5 Beta 7, obviously this is still for developers only, there were not to many new features added this time round more bug fixes and security updates than anything. Read the full article [here]

• Soon after iOS 5 Beta 7 being released it was confirmed it was 100% jail breakable by the currently available Redsn0w, but the Dev_Team have now pushed out an update for Redsn0w specifically for Beta 7. You can read the full article [here]

• A lot of news this week is orientated around the release of Beta 7, it was noticed this week that Beta 7 has added multiple computer wifi sync which is a great move by Apple. Being able to only sync with one itunes at a time has always been a pain in my opinion, you will still have to have multiple itunes authorized on the same account.
• Reports have been flying round this week of Apple investigators impersonating police officers. After an iPrototype went missing, very similar to last years story of the missing iPhone, this time Apple responded much sooner and traced the iDevice via GPS. This is were the story begins to differ from article to article. Read the detailed article [here]

• Once again the iPhone 4S/5 rumor mills have been churning, this weeks it has been reported that the new iPhone will have a 4″ screen. Images of suggested dimensions went alongside to accompany these rumors. Read the full article and catch the photos [here]

• This week Tiny Umbrella has been updated to support iOS 5 Beta’s 4, 5 and 6. Unfortunately this update was released prior (just) to Apple releasing Beta 7 so as of now it still is not supported but Notcom confirmed he is working on an update. Read the article [here]

• Also this week Sn0wbreeze has been updated for iOS5 Beta 7 (This week is all about B7)
This software is still windows only, it allows users to update to Beta 7 and preserve your base band. The only thing I do not agree with is the UDID check remover pirating Apple software is illegal do this at your own risk. Read the full article [here]

• The biggest news this week has to be once again about the iPhone 5, it seems that service providers maybe getting there first glance at the device as we speak. Kefi247 the person behind this story says that he and a few friends have seen and used the new idevice. He also goes on to claim that the iPhone he used was a 64GB version! now this would be a surprise. See the mock up of the iPhone 5 and read the article [here]

• To stay on the track of the iPhone 5, a picture of an internal document from BestBuy has been made public showing that there is going to be an Apple fixture installation due on the 21st of october. Could this be the release date for the iPhone 5? Read and see the pictures [here]

As the wheels are slowly picking up speed towards the new iDevice releases, we can expect rumors coming thick and fast in the next few weeks. As always see our home page to see all the latest news from the iDevice world. The weekly round up will be back next sunday and every sunday….

Well, this week the hits just keep on coming! Only hours after I gave the iphone_dev_team credit for being on top of their game this season for their relative speed and progress by getting out their new jailbreaking tools to the public in “double-quick” fashion, they have gone and done it again. This time, they have released redsn0w 0.9.8b7b, which officially caters specifically to the newest beta version of iOS 5.0 released by Apple, Inc., for their iDevices. This was officially announced by IDT member @MuscleNerd himself via twitter:

And as you can see, he also mentioned that there were some “goodies” thrown in there for older bottom iPhone #G[s] users. Those goodies are as follows:

Update #7b: About 12 hours after we released redsn0w 0.9.8b7 with some improvements for iOS5b6, Apple went and released iOS5b7 (what are the odds of that?!?). Even though that redsn0w could still jailbreak iOS5b7, you needed to point it at the iOS5b6 IPSW to do so. Today’s redsn0w 0.9.8b7b lets you point redsn0w directly at the iOS5b7 IPSW instead.

We’ve also added some overall improvements for old-bootrom 3GS owners (where the 24kpwn exploit applies): on those devices, you can tell redsn0w to untether 4.3.5 and lower, or iOS5b7. Old-bootrom 3GS owners can once again choose custom logos, and/or verbose booting (for the really nerdy iPhone3GS fans out there!). And it allows 4.3.4 or 4.3.5 users to use ultrasn0w again (if they have a compatible baseband).

Last but not least, we fixed some lingering Verizon iPhone4 4.2.10 JB issues.

Have a great Labor Day weekend!

So, for those of you bold enough to continually upgrade your iOS betas every couple of weeks, feel free to take the plunge and delve deep. This will most likely be the last beta before the iOS 5.0 Golden Master is announced by Apple. Let us know how it goes, and as always, keep your eyes peeled here, we will keep you informed of any new updates as we hear about them.

Notcom the creator of Tiny Umbrella has pushed out an update which allows support for iOS 5 Betas 4,5 and 6. Unfortunately the update was released just before Apple released Beta 7 which means currently Beta 7 is not supported.

Notcom also remarked that he is also working on a implementation of DFU pwnage support for Tiny Umbrella for those with devices exploitable by Limera1n and also pwnage2 for supported devices.

As always every time a new iOS is released remember to save shsh’s as you never know when Apple will stop signing them. To keep up to date on updates for Tiny Umbrella from Notcom visit his blog [here]

A new version of sn0wbreeze has recently been released. Sn0wbreeze 2.8 beta 7 now comes with added support for jailbreaking iOS 5 beta 7 on Windows.

All the release notes is down below:

* Now jailbreaks iOS 5 beta 7.
* Still removes UDID Developer check + Beta timer.
* Still has the ability to hacktivate.
* Still preserves the baseband (as always!).
———————————
This is a Tethered Jailbreak meaning the user to have their device contacted to a computer to boot the device, use ibooty.

Supported Devices and Tethered?

* iPhone 3GS (old bootrom)…..NO
* iPhone 3GS (new bootrom)….YES
* iPhone 4 (GSM)…………..YES
* iPhone 4 (CDMA)………….YES
* iPod Touch 3G……………YES
* iPod Touch 4…………….YES
* iPad 1G…………………YES

* NOT IPAD 2 YET

Here is a simple tutorial;

1.Download Snowbreeze 2.8 beta 7 from here

2.Run the Sn0wBreeze.exe. Hit Ok, then Close Credits button and then hit the next button.

3.Either drag & drop the IOS5 beta firmware file in the given box or hit the Browse button and select the iOS 5 IPSW file for your iDevice. Snowbreeze will identify the IPSW firmware file. When done, hit the next button.

4.Select the Expert Mode, Hit next button, then select General and hit Next. Make your desired choices, then keep hitting Next.

5.Now select the Build IPSW option and hit next. Sn0wBreeze will start building custom firmware to jailbreak your iphone4, 3GS, iDevice. Since the building process takes several minutes to complete, you can either choose to play PacMan or stick with the Spinner.

6.Once Done! Hit the OK button. (Custom firmware can be found on desktop)

7.Now follow the Sn0wbreeze instructions to put your iDevice into a Pwned State. Sn0wBreeze instructions are important to follow because this will put your iDevice into Pwned DFU state;

Hold Power + Home buttons for 10 seconds..

Now release the Power button but keep holding the Home button for 10-30 more seconds..

Your device should now be in DFU mode Sn0wBreeze will prompt you once you’re into Pwned DFU state…

Now open iTunes, Hold down the Shift/Option key and hit the Restore button, Browse and select the custom firmware that we just created, from the desktop.

iTunes will start restoring iOS 5 on your iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch. Once done, your Device is now jailbroken tethered for all Devices apart from iPhone 3gs thats untethered.

What’s the difference Between a Tethered and a Untethered you may ask

Well Untethered means you can reboot your iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad without having to connect it to your computer. Tethered means in order to reboot, you must connect it to your computer and run the program again.

Please remember that jailbreaks designed for beta versions of the iOS are meant for developers only to ready their tweaks and applications for public release.

Here we are again another week ticked off the year, and what a week it has been in the iDevice world. This article will contain all the biggest news of the week be it App updates, breaking news, cydia tweaks and anything else iDevice related.

• The biggest news of the week has to be that Steve Jobs has stepped down as CEO of Apple, but will still remain on the board of directors. This has allowed former COO Tim Cook to take the reins from Steve, the reasoning for Steve stepping down has still not been made public. Catch the full details in the original article [here]

•iPhone 5 rumors are on the way up this week with reports coming in that all major US networks will more than likely be getting the iPhone 5 at launch. The biggest surprise is that T-Mobile USA may be finally gaining access to the iPhone, read the full article [here]

• Like I said the iPhone 5 rumor mills have started already, it has also been said this week that the iPhone 5 will be a global phone supporting both GSM & CDMA networks.
Ever since I have owned an iPhone I have Jailbroken it. It was the first thing I did when my iPhone 2G turned up at my door and ever since then I have not updated ...

Ever since I have owned an iPhone I have Jailbroken it. It was the first thing I did when my iPhone 2G turned up at my door and ever since then I have not updated my iPhone unless there has been a Jailbreak for that firmware or hardware.

I am now running iOS 5 beta 6 and have previously Jailbroken all the other beta firmwares but when beta 6 dropped I thought “lets try to run stock for a while and see I get on”. And I have to say there is nothing I really miss about Jailbreaking.

Now you see with iOS 5 beta 6 there is no untethered Jailbreak, so if I want to reboot my phone (or have to reboot it) I have to be near a computer, which is not really possible all the time and this is the main reason I decided to go stock.

With all previous firmwares there has always felt like something was missing for me or something that didn’t really feel right but iOS 5 managed to capture that and has left me thinking do I really need a Jailbreak?

First of all my main reasons for Jailbreaking were Lockinfo and qTweeter. Lockinfo provided a way that allowed me to see my missed calls, important calander events and more right on my LockScreen but it also allowed me to block those annoying Apple popup boxes. qTweeter was there to all me to quickly tweet from any application this usually was a link to a webpage or YouTube vid. Apple has managed to grab both of those things and implement well into iOS5.

Those are just 2 things that Apple have taken from the community thou, the biggest would be WiFi-Sync. The creator of WiFI-Sync first sent his App to Apple to be sold in the App Store, but they did not allow it, so he then released it on Cydia. Enter iOS 5 and guess what, Apple has a new feature called “WiFi Sync” that allows you to sync your iDevice with iTunes via WiFi. Tell me they didn’t take that from the iCommunity – heck they even have the same logo (well same enough)

Its not just that Apple are taking the iCommunities tweaks and Apps and putting them into iOS as standard, its that now developers of those tweaks and Apps are starting to get bored or Apples is employing them!

First of all take Geohot (the orginal iPhone hacker) he has now left the Jailbreak scene because he works for Facebook, and I can certainly say that somewhere in his contact that it says “no more releasing Jailbreaks”

Next in line is Comex, just this week he has announced that he has started an internship with Apple, by by Comex, no more Jailbreaks from him.

The after that chpwn (the guy behind infinidock and infinifolders) stands up on Twitter and says:

I’m not joining Apple, but I’m also bored and probably not going to do much more jailbreak stuff. Probably.

The biggest problem that people complained about was Apples notification popups they where ugly and clunky, not really Apple. There has been many people that have tried to change the notifications system but the favourite seemed to be Mobile Notifier. Guess what happened to the Dev of that tweak, yep you guessed right Apple got him, and funnily enough the new iOS 5 notifications look real similar to Mobile Notifier.

So its not just tweak ideas they take from the Jailbreak scene and community but also the devs.

I know there are still some great Jailbreak features out there like Winterboard and iFile and many of you will argue that Jailbreaking will never die and there there is always tweaks out there to make things better and I agree with that, but also iOS 5 is probably the most feature packed OS there is and Apple seems to have got it right.

Lets say for instance that Apple introduce themeing, hey they stole the idea of Homescreen wallpaper so its not that hard to believe, and they allowed themers to developer themes and sell them in the App Store do you really think that many of the iCommunity themers would stay to release their stuff in Cydia. That would kill one of the biggest reasons why people Jailbreak.

I personally think that slowly but surely Apple is starting to win the Jailbreak battle. They are taking the tweaks, Jailbreak Devs and the tweaks Devs themselves. They are also making it harder to Jailbreak their devices.

Look at the iPad 2, we have only seen 1 Jaibreak for this device and the device has been out for nearly 7 months (released on March the 11th in the US). That Jailbreak was not even a bootrom Jailbrerak it was a Userland one meaning that with a small iOS update it was killed, plus the Comex the developer of JailbreakMe (the program used to Jailbreak the iPad 2) now works for Apple.

I’m not saying that the Jailbreak is totally over or that I will never Jailbreak again but I can see the end coming soon, either with Apple stopping the exploits from being found or them implementing that many features that there will not be any need to Jailbreak anymore.

Let me know in the comments below what you think about the Jailbreak Scene or hit me up on Twitter @d900man. I’m interested to know what your thoughts are.

This week saw Steve Jobs, the legend behind our favourite company Apple, resign as CEO due to ongoing health complications which meant he was finding it difficult to fulfil his duties. It is no secret that Steve has had complications for the last few years but he still managed to headline the keynote at the WWDC 11 event earlier this year where iOS5 was announced. Sadly this was probably going to be his last keynote although we still hope to see him at the iPhone 5 unveiling but not at the risk of your health, Steve.

The day after his resignation an image appeared on TMZ.com showing an extremely withered and waif Steve Jobs which frankly made him look like he could drop dead at any second. We didn’t cover this out of respect for Steve Jobs because if it was him it certainly shouldn’t have been broadcast across the internet.

Today it has indeed been shown to be a fake shopped image, which is frankly disgusting. Such sites that make up these things should hang their heads in shame.

The image below shows how the image has been Photoshopped;

It is things like this that make the internet the sorry state it is today where people will believe anything they see without giving it a second thought. TMZ, you should be ashamed of yourselves.

We urge you all to think before you believe everything you see and read.

Jay Freeman, who is better known as Saurik the creator of Cydia, has filed a lawsuit against the Cydia.com domain name with the hopes of obtaining its rights. Saurik owns Saurikit LLC, and he is filing his suit based on trademark infringement.

The owners of Cydia.com have refused to give Saurik rights to the domain in the past, citing that users will not be confused and have put a statement at the bottom of each page making it clear that they have nothing to do with Saurikit LLC and the Cydia Stores. However, Saurik still proposes a viable complaint that users will be confused by the domain if it does not point to the infamous jailbreak store he created.

Jay himself has posted a comment on idownloadblog.com in relation to this subject.

“The key thing to realize here is that cydia.com, which was originally a website with random ads on it (totally unrelated, obviously, to the iPhone or Cydia), has, over the years, attempted to take advantage of the work that I’ve put into this name, without any quotes for how I might be able to get the domain from them.

Further, when I first reached out to them regarding the domain name, they not only refused to simply sell it to me, but immediately decided to put iPhone-related advertisements on it, which caused a large number of users to believe that cydia.com was, in fact, Cydia: the ads even mentioned things like “get apps here”.

This, of course, violated the registered trademark that I have on “Cydia”: they cannot construct something that attempts to confuse people in this fashion for their monetary gain. Now, what I should have done at this point is, apparently, failed a UDRP: supposedly I would have easily won.

However, as I did not have domain name lawyers at the time, my personal lawyer simply said I should file a cease and desist. This resulted in the owners of cydia.com deciding to randomly turn their website into a non-profit forum. They put out a call for moderators, and nowhere on the site was it clear that they were not Cydia.

In fact, they even sent so far as to backdate the post they made to claim the forum had been in existence since 2009, even though it was posted in 2010. (This made no sense, however, given that my trademark was registered in 2008, so I’m not certain why they felt the need to lie about this.)

This forum was actually (unfortunately) quite popular, and (of course) all of the posts made on it were about Cydia: users asking for help, from the people they considered to be the official source. I even received e-mail from angry users claiming they had gotten no, useless, or even incorrect advice when they used cydia.com, as everyone, of course, assumes that I own the domain name: it is just too similar in content.

So, more complaints from me to them (with no response), and the result ended up being this notice at the bottom of the page… the very bottom of the page, where no one even looks (and therefore is not legally useful for them)… that claims that they aren’t actually affiliated with Cydia.

At some point, and I do not know of any triggering event for it, they decided to change the website to something that claims they’ve been “hacked” and hit with “spam”. This has been even worse for Cydia: potential users see this and assume Cydia is some horribly insecure platform.

None of this, however, helped the actual confusion problem: I seriously got a message from a reporter a few weeks ago asking about my plans for cydia.com, which they assumed that I owned. Seriously: they assumed I own cydia.com, and simply was unable to deal with the hacking and spam, and was rethinking it. *sigh*

Regardless, further attempts to reach out to them have failed, which has led to this lawsuit. I think this is the correct thing for everyone involved, and I’m still perfectly happy to come to some reasonable settlement with the owners of the domain name. The hope is that this lawsuit paves the way to actually getting people to sit down and talk at all.

So, if you want, you all can sit around and tell me I’m being unreasonable here, but you are simply wrong. These people own many thousands of thousands of domain names (this is not an exaggeration), many of which are one-off typos of existing brands (like wokia.com), and seem to be in the business of laying seeming-harmless land mines that they can use to later twist the knife on otherwise innocent people.

I, certainly, have no issue with taking them to court over this, and my only regret is that the end result of my winning will almost certainly not manage to make any change in their overall harmful business operation. “

The QuickMath tweak will let you do quick calculation on your Spotlight search just like the Mac OS. You can do quick addition, subtraction, multiplication or division.

I wish that Apple would bring this to iOS as well.

There are no options to configure and this tweak is apart of the TweakWeek Program.

QuickMath is available via the BigBoss Repo and it’s Free
