One of the key upgrades of the iPhone 4S compared to the iPhone 4 was the 8MP camera that was on offer. Well that seems all well and good but carriers in Singapore are set to offer the new iPhone cameraless.

This may seem to be a bit odd and I have to say I have thought to myself how strange it would be to own a mobile phone without a camera but the Singapore carriers have good reason to be offering this.

Following a year-long review, Mindef recently issued guidelines to its servicemen on the use of such smartphones.

It is understood that servicemen with these phones must show a certificate to prove that their handsets were modified by any one of the local telcos.

Last September, Mindef spokesman Desmond Tan told The Straits Times that Mindef and the SAF were ‘exploring ways to allow our personnel to use smartphones while maintaining our current security policy on disallowing personal image-capturing devices to be used on Mindef/SAF premises’

Now there is a catch to this however. These iPhone’s will not come with any Apple warranty as they have not been sanctioned by Apple themselves, it will be the work of the carriers in Singapore that will be stripping the cameras straight out of the devices.

In a section of their recent blog post called “iOS 3: DIE DIE DIE!” – Camera+ has announced proudly that they will stop providing support after Version 2.3.3.

Explaining their reason for this, Camera+ state;

To put it bluntly, supporting iOS 3 a huge pain in the ass for us. It takes resources away from actually moving the app forward because we often need to special-case the code so that the app will work with the mostly obsolete OS. And this causes us to have to test many code paths. It’s simply not a good use of available resources, especially since there are so few people still using iOS 3.

In fact, the aforementioned I ♥ Analog FX Pack bug was caused by us having to deal with legacy code issues. It’ll be really nice to see iOS 3 support go away so that we can focus on adding cool things to the app and not supporting ancient history.

If you use iOS3, firstly why? Secondly, does this affect you? We’d like your comments!

And for some lulz, Camera+ has provided some made up facts for everyone, on iOS3 users.

Some made-up statistics about iOS 3 users…

76% of iOS 3 users are Satanists

59% of iOS 3 users own at least 3 Britney Spears albums

82% of iOS 3 users hate puppies, kitties, and bunnies

67% of iOS 3 users secretly want to get an Android phone

a whopping 94% of iOS 3 users believe in Creationism

Today at WWDC11 we saw want the iCommunity have been waiting for, for a long time now, iOS 5, and after watching the keynote Apple have really pulled out the stops.

So lets have a look at what iOS 5 will bring to iDevices.

Notifications

For a long time Apple has been ridiculed over the way it has delivered notifications to its users well with iOS 5 they seem to have finally got it right.

Apple have now introduced ‘Notification Centre’. This is where you can pull down from the status bar in any app to see a list of your notifications (can I hear Android anybody).

New notifications now show also show at the top of the screen making the status bar double height and then disappearing again, not effecting what you are doing at all.

On the Lockscreen notifications are displayed in one panel, where you can slide the notification and launch the app straight away.

I have to say Apple look like they have finally got this part of iOS right. The ‘Notification Centre’ even shows your weather and stock feeds at the top.

iMessage

For all you people out there that wish you had BBM, well Apple has listened to you. Apple is launching iMessages. iMessages is an iDevice to iDevice messaging service. It allows you to start messaging from one device and pick up right where you left off on another. iMessages allows you to send pics, video contact and locations

Camera

Finally Apple have done something with the Camera app. Finally after a long time of Jailbreaker Devs allowing us to use the volume keys to control the shutter, Apple have thought that would also be a good idea.

Also in the camera app Apple have giving us gridlines, pinch to zoom, single tap to focus and exposure locks. We also now have to ability to launch the camera app straight from the lock screen by double clicking the home button then selecting the icon that appears.

Pictures

Pictures app along with the camera app has seen a big update.

The picture app now has the ability to crop, rotate and enhance your pics. It will allow you to remove red eye and a big one, allow you to organise your pics into albums right on your device.

Safari

Apple has made some changes to safari to make it a lot better for the users also. They have now given us tabbed pages on the iPad so that we can flick through web pages quicker. On other iDevices we get reader so that it removes all the stuff that we don’t need from it, making reading your favourite pages a lot easier. Reader lists will also let you save articles so that you can come back and read them later.

Reminders

For all of you that love to make lists, Apple brings you reminder. Reminder allows you to make lists but also gives you the option to set Geo-Fences for the reminders also. This means that when you either leave or enter a certain location the reminder will pop up.

Along with PC Free Apple have finally bought WiFi syncing to the table, allowing you to sync your device wirelessly. As soon as you plug your device into a charging point and your iTunes is open your device will sync.

Twitter

Yes after all the rumours Twitter got an in depth mark in iOS 5, you are now able to tweet from the Pictures, Safari, Youtube and Maps apps. Just on sign in and then you can tweet as much as you like

Other Features

Other things have been added to iOS 5, such as Emoji for everybody, separate Video and iPod apps the ability to add dictionary short cuts (so OMG would change to Oh My God).

The iPad has new keyboard layouts also, it is now able to split so you have a space to rest you thumbs. Game Centre allows you to add a profile pic and also allows you to purchase apps right from inside the app.

New things to the iPad also include the ability to wireless mirror the iPad 2 using an Apple TV and multitasking gestures are now right in the iPads OS.

The Mail and Calendar apps also got a lookin when they dished out iOS 5 features. You can now add calendars right on your devices and Mail allows you to edit the text by using rich text editing tools.

iOS 5 also bought over the air updates. So if Apple update the firmware your device will auto update also. But don’t worry it will not download the whole of the new firmware it will only download the new parts. Apple is calling this Delta Updates, these can be turned on and off in the settings menu.

So all in all the iOS 5 is a great update for your iDevice.

iOS will be available in the Fall (August / September time) and will be available for the iPad 1 & 2, iPhone 4 and 3GS, and the 3rd and 4th Gen iPod touches.

Rumours about the next generation iPhone start as soon as one is released and this year is no different. So I thought it would be a good idea to give you a full round up of the rumours surrounding this years model, so here it goes.

It may be called the iPhone 5

It may be called the iPhone 4S (like the 3GS)

It will not have mush of a design change from the iPhone 4

It will support a 4 inch edge to edge display

It will run Apple’s A5 chip – same chip that is in the iPad 2

It will have a 8 mega pixel rear camera

It will support 1080p Video recording

The camera and flash will be at separated and be at either edges of the device

It will have a August release

It will have a September Release

There will be another iPhone in spring 2012

It will run iOS 5

It will contain no SIM card – Allowing it to work on both CDMA & GSM Networks

So there you have it, the iPhone 5 / 4S (or whatever you like to call it) rumours so far. I guess we will have to wait till WWDC11 to find out anything for certain.

Let us know in the comments below about what you think the Next Gen iPhone will be like.

For the last few weeks there has been rumours and speculation that the iPhone 5 will have a new rear plate that will separate the camera from the flash.

We have seen cases come to light with this design, iPhone 5 camera parts showing this maybe possible and also pictures of a possible back plate for the new iPhone.

Its this back plate picture that is most important though, not because of what the picture shows of the camera design but the reflection that comes from the back plate.

The people from iFans have taken the picture below, which came from SANA (a chinese version of Twitter) and done a bit of tweaking to find a hidden gem.

After their tweaking this is what they got..

As you can see from the above picture, the camera and Apple logo can clearly be seen, but there is also a small black dot that can be seen, could this be the newly placed flash?

This seems to be to far fetched to be a hoax picture, as it would have taken a lot of time and skill to produce this effect.

Rumour also has it that Foxconn may have misplaced an i5, could this have been used to take the above image?

Let us know what you think about the image above, in the comments below.

Today has been a hot day for news about the iPhone 5, with these rumours many focusing on the rear camera of the device.

First of all today we saw that Alibaba posted a new Case, but this was different it was the iPhone 5.

First of all the case shows that the ‘new device’ will have and edge-to-edge display (not the first time we have heard this) but that the flash part of the camera has been relocated to the other side of the device.

Now 9 to 5 Mac are reporting that images of the iPhone 4 vs iPhone 5 camera parts are being bounced around the web.

As you can see from the picture above both front and rear camera are said to have a redesign but it is the rear camera that has the biggest change. Once again there is no signs of the flash part of the camera on this piece. This could once again point to the flash unit being place on the other side of the iPhone.

Its strange to think of the flash unit being in a different place on the rear of the iPhone and not being a camera expert myself I can not say if it would work, but from the case picture above I myself don’t think it looks right.

This new news about the iPhone 5 however doers not fit in to what we heard about the iPhone 4S earlier today

All that I can say is that with WWDC just around the corner we will have to wait and see what happens.

Flickr one of the biggest photo sharing sites on the net. The service has over 4.5 million users uploading photos daily.

The site tracks and publishes the data of which devices were used to take the pictures.

A month ago the iPhone 4 topped the list of the devices used to take pictures, the list also included digital camera so we are not just talking smartphones here. I know from my day to day usage I use my iPhone 4 camera all the time to take picture of my kids to funny moments of friends and family.

Well from the stats published 4,000 people are uploading photos to Flickr on a daily basis, with over 7 million pictures that have been taken with the iPhone 4 have been uploaded to the service since the device was launched last June.

So with 4,000 users using the iPhone 4 to take pictures and uploading them to Flickr, what are the likely stats of the iPad 2 that sold millions of units?

Well here you go, there are a total of 22 people using their iPad 2′s to take pictures and upload them to the Flickr site, yes you read it right 22.

See when they announced the iPad 2 the prospect of having camera’s on was not really a reason to head out and buy one, in fact I bought a 1st gen iPad the day before Apple announced the iPad 2. In my opinion there is just no need for a rear camera on the iPad 2, loads of people have a smartphone and I am damn sure that if they are carrying their iPad 2 round then they they will be carrying their smartphone round. I am even more sure that they will be pulling out their smartphone to grab that shot rather than their iPad 2.

Now I’m not saying that the iPad 2 should have no cameras I can see the reason for a front facing one (hello FaceTime), but like I have said the rear one is just a waste of time.

Let me know in the comments below if you have an iPad 2 and use it for taking pic.

So with rumours spreading about the next generation iPhone its seems that reports are now showing that the new model will be named the ‘iPhone 4S’ (yes just like the iPhone 3GS) and not the iPhone 5.

Jefferies are claiming that the new model will feature small cosmetic changes but not a total redesign like we saw of the iPhone 4. They also claim that the ’4S’ will have improved front and rear camera and support HSPA+. Another change that they are saying will happen is that this new model will have Apple’s new A5 chip that is found in the iPad 2.

Due to the new workings of the ’4S’ Jefferies says that it is likely that both Sprint, T-Mobile USA and China Mobile will also see the device come to their networks.

This news does not come out of the blue however especially the part about the A5 chip, as we have heard recently that Apple has supplied the Higher Profile gaming developers with an iPhone running the A5 chip.

The new ‘iPhone 4S’ Jefferies have said will hit stores in September this year, once again keeping inline with earlier rumours.

So all that has to be asked is that will you be getting the ‘iPhone 4S’ or will you wait out for the iPhone 5?

Let us know in the comments below.

Hello all, hope everything is going well! If you’ve found my article trending by now you’ll notice I like to dig through the App Store for random apps, as long as they are useful. Yesterday, I stumbled across one called Photosynth and best of all, it’s free. This app allows you to take panorama pictures so that you can have a 3D remembrance of something. The app is a little tricky to get used too but not difficult in any way. Below are some screenshots and tips for you.

Ok so, the app itself is simple, you just tap to start and then you take the images. Here is where it gets tricky

-Your goal is to keep that dot along the line that is drawn across the photos.
-You really should overlap about half of your image and have the other half take a new part
-The app will automatically take the screenshot if it can recognize what you’re doing, which 99% of the time it does
-Sometime, you may have to take a manual screenshot

Todays Apple event as we all thought was based on the iPad 2 and there was some exciting announcements about it, so here is the Round up of todays event.

The new iPad (iPad 2) will be running the new Apple A5 dual-core chip for twice the speed. The iPad 2 is also 33% thinner and 15% lighter than the original model, which Apple says really makes a difference.

So some of the things that we knew would come to the iPad 2 are firstly the front and rear cameras, this is mostly to support FaceTime for the iPad, but also the new iMovie App that will now also support the iPad 2.

The front camera will record footage with VGA quality, while the rear camera will record in 720p HD and take 5MP stills, pretty much like the iPhone 4.

Although the unit will be smaller, they have still managed to keep the up to 10 hour battery life which i think is fairly impressive. This we now know to be due to there being 3 larger batteries taking up a whopping 49% of the space inside it.

Along with the front and rear camera, Apple have also added a Three -Axis Giro, this will take game play to another level, especially since Apple are also claiming to have 9x faster graphics performance than the original iPad.

Two other things that Apple showed off where GarageBand and PhotoBooth for the iPad.

Straight after the media conference the Online Apple stores opened again for viewers. We noticed that the First Gen iPad has been reduced to £329 for the 16Gb WiFi model.

One thing that really took my eye about the event was the new case for the iPad 2, its not so much of a case but more of a cover. Both the new cover and iPad 2 have magnets in them so the cover easily clips on and off. The cover only sits on glass of the iPad, and when completely covered the iPad goes to sleep, and soon as the cover is slightly lifted the iPad magically awakes. The covers will come in 10 colours and I have to say out of everything that was shown this is what really blow me away.

In Fact instead of me telling you about it watch it for yourself below…

Click here to view the embedded video.

The iPad 2 cover like the original iPad case from Apple also converts into a typing and viewing stand, but this one as you saw above does it in style.

The iPad 2 will also include something called Video Mirroring, meaning that with a small accessory you will be able to display the iPad’s screen on a second display e.g HD TV.

So that was pretty much it from the event, there was no talk about the recent pulling of MobileMe boxes from retail or online stores. But there is one last thing, and in fact a major thing, and that is that Mr Jobs himself was there running the event and looked fit and healthy.

Oh and guess what, the iPad 2 will be available in 2 colours, yes I said 2 and yes you are right they are black and white. Apple say that both colours will be available on launch day. (so what is happening to the iPhone 4 in white Mr Jobs???)

For More info watch our Overview vid from our own Hoodstah….

Click here to view the embedded video.

So the big question is that will you be queueing up on March 25th (March 11th in the USA) for the new iPad 2, or like me are you happy with the iPad 1st Gen. Let us know in the comments below.

A new fun little tweak has hit Cydia in the last few days called CameraWallpaper (You don’t have to guess what it does really do you)

CameraWallpaper is available from the BigBoss Repo on Cydia for a price of $1.99, which I think is fairly reasonable.

The tweak does not really have a function as such and even the developer of CameraWallpaper Limneos admits this. He says that the function of the tweak is to be fun and he puts it in the same kind of category as tweaks such as Barrel and GraviBoard.

So thats a brief background intro to the tweak but for those of you that have not got what its does lets look a bit further into it.

The tweak allows you to make your SpringBoard see through so you can see what is going on behind / straight through your iDevice.

The tweak is activated through the use of Activator so for me I just need to double tap the status bar and up pops a menu for me to select a number of options from.

For those devices that allow it you can use both front and back cameras, you can pause the camera so that it will display the last shown image until you exit the tweak. You can also take a picture straight form the settings popup.

There is no new icon added to the SpringBoard so the settings can be found in the stock settings app, from here you can choose from a number of options as you can see above but you can also change the opacity of the video / camera capture and the icons.

I have to say that the tweak does not really have a function but its great to mess around with and now you don’t even have to launch the camera app if you wish to take a picture of your nearest and dearest.

There is a small problem with the tweak at the moment though for people that are using 4.2.1 where the captured pictures are not saved to the correct orientation when captured.

Let us know what you think in the comments below of the fun little tweak.

Recently an app has hit the App Store that is changing the future of translation. It goes by the name of World Lens and best of all, the app itself is free. World Lens is a translator that utilizes your camera to translate almost anything on the fly, without any network connection. The common method of translation is to use your 3g on your iDevice and use translators to find out what something really means. While effective it does require a connection, something this app does not.

Start by opening the application and you will see that it utilizes your camera. Move the camera so that whatever it is you are trying to translate is focused and instantly that sign in Spanish that says “No Parking” is in English. You can also use the app as a word translator if the camera is giving you a hard time.

Now there are a few technicalities with this app. To restate something from before, “the app itself is free”. Yes that is true, but the translations aren’t. By default you get Spanish to English and English to Spanish free but, this only lasts until December 31st according to the App Store. Any other translations you wish to make will require a language pack which is going to cost you $4.99. It is a one time buy so you only have to pay once if you wanted to translate French to English or vice versa. After that the pack stays in your app forever with unlimited use. Also, you wont be able to translate a full paper to English. The app is just not powerful enough to do that yet. For an app like this though, it’s worth it, the pros by far out-weigh the cons.

Well, it’s another iPad rumor, as if we don’t get enough of them. Apparently, the iPad 2g is going to have a rear facing camera and is going to have a slimmer design. Take a look at the screenshot below. It’s a leaked image of an iPad 2g case from one of Apple’s overseas manufacturers. The circle cutout in the top left would suggest a rear facing camera. We expected the slimmer design so that’s good, but a rear facing camera? I mean it seems useful at random occasions, but would you really be willing to pay an extra $50(?) for a camera you would barely use?

On a happier note, it looks like we are going to be seeing an SD card slot. At the bottom, one of the open slots suggests the possibility of an SD card. This would definitely be nice, it will make sorting out media much easier and allow for easier sharing. Unfortunately we aren’t seeing any possibility of a USB option. For now we are going to have to wait and see. As always MGiP will keep you updated.

iFixit has, as usual, unscrewed and dissected the new iPod Touch 3. The iPod nano 5G had few surprises, but the new iPod Touch appears to contain a number of exciting secrets. The chip used by the wireless communication could technically be able to connect to high-speed 802.11n networks. Another interesting discovery is that Apple is indeed planning to build a camera in the iPod Touch. Previously leaked photos of an iPod touch camera module were said to be fake, this also seems to be inaccurate.

iFixit has clearly done their best to dissect the iPod Touch to find out the origin of all its components . Here are three cases:

* The ARM processor in the iPod touch 3G is newer than the iPhone 3GS. That it is faster than the 2G iPod touch was already known how the new cpu compares to the iPhone 3GS cpu is not clear.
* The combination of digitizer/glass panel/midplane is different from previous models. When the glass of an iPod touch 3G breaks, can the older parts of the iPod touch be used?
* The chip for wireless communications has come from Broadcom. The documentation of this Broadcom chip (Broadcom BCM4329), indicates that this chip supports 802.11n (next 802.11a/b/g). At present, the 3G iPod Touch is unable to connect to 802.11n networks, but in theory, with a software upgrade this is possible. The Broadcom chip also includes an integrated FM receiver and transmitter, which is something Apple could enable.
* The top of the board contains a blank area measuring 6 x 3 x 3 mm. The camera of the 5G iPod nano would easily fit here.

Does Apple still have an iPod touch with 3G camera planned for a later stage? Or were the rumors about problems with the camera sensor correct? It seems so, because in earlier leaked photos of an iPod Touch with camera shows that the board is identical to the logic board of the iPod touch 3G and definitely not on the board of the iPod touch 2G. It is virtually impossible that these leaked photos are photoshop edits. Is an Apple iPod touch with camera coming soon? We’ll see …

Steve Jobs was interviewed by the New York Times’ David Pogue after the launch who asked him the question we all want to know, “Why no camera for the iPod Touch?”.

Here’s the answer: “Originally, we weren’t exactly sure how to market the Touch. Was it an iPhone without the phone? Was it a pocket computer? What happened was, what customers told us was, they started to see it as a game machine,” he said. “We started to market it that way, and it just took off. And now what we really see is it’s the lowest-cost way to the App Store, and that’s the big draw. So what we were focused on is just reducing the price to $199. We don’t need to add new stuff. We need to get the price down where everyone can afford it.”

So there you go, better to pull the punters in with a cheaper gaming device than add some extra functionality. Obviously the Nano has one and if that’s a success, don’t discount Apple sneaking one in down the line. Talking of the Nano camera, Pogue also asked why it shot video, but not stills. Apparently that’s a ‘technical’ decision – the sensors you need to record video are extremely thin, able to slip effortlessly into a Nano. However, the ones with enough resolution for stills, especially with autofocus (like the sensor in the iPhone), are too thick for the Nano right now.

And for the future? Well, Jobs doesn’t believe e-books are a winner, pointing out that Amazon isn’t exactly screaming about its Kindle sales. “Usually, if they sell a lot of something, you want to tell everybody.” But he did say new products are being finalised: “There are some things that I’m focusing a lot of attention on right now – to polish,” he said. “No, I don’t think we’re going to miss a beat. We have some really good stuff coming up.” Tablet perhaps? It’s a strong possibility.

There has been much speculation as to what will be announced, the main being whether the 3rd Generation iPod Touch will be equipped with a camera.

To start it off a welcome figure took the stage, albeit looking rather thin and waif-like, in the form of Steve Jobs played in with “It’s Only Rock’N'Roll” by the Rolling Stones.

He started off saying that he now has the liver of a healthy 20′s person who tragically died in a car crash but was kind enough to donate their organs.

He then went on to give the usual statistics concerning the App Store and downloads, but added that 30,000 ringtones will be available in iTunes, from all 4 major labels, priced at $1.29 each with free preview.

Firmware OS 3.1 Update

iPhone/iPod Touch firmware 3.1 update is available today in iTunes. Remember, don’t update yet if you wish to keep your Jailbreak and Unlock, the Dev-Team will release their tools soon enough.

The update is free for all iPhone and iPod Touch models.

iTunes9 – Major Update

As previously documented, Apple has released a major update in the form of iTunes 9. Some features are;

Genius – now smarter than ever, includes mixes

Improved syncing – now sync genres, artists and new genius playlists

Arrange Springboard – At last!!! You can now rearrange your springboard icons in iTunes using drag-and-drop method and sync to your iDevice. This will help those who love the iNav style themes, yet think that it is just way too time consuming to set up

iTunes LP – Buying an iTunes LP will get you video, liner notes, credits, lyrics etc. all the things you would normally get when buying a normal LP.

iTunes Extra – Just like LP, when purchasing a DVD, you will also receive special feature type extras, right there in iTunes

Home sharing – share iTunes library amongst home network computers. Any purchases made in one library automatically adds a copy to the other.

New iPods

At this point Steve handed over to Phil “The Thrill” Schiller to talk about the iPods. More statistics – Apple holds 73% market share in digital media players to Microsofts 1% (lol).

Says how great the iPods are, wifi, iTunes built-in, Safari, e-mail etc. “Not everyone’s computer fits in their pocket” he says as the image to the right pops up (oops – Dell…).

He then gives more statistics, games this time.

iPod Pricing

The $299 and $399 versions will be 50% faster, and run OpenGL ES 2.0 – like the iPhone 3G[S].

iPod Classic getting revamped. Now 160GB, same size, same $249 price.

iPod Shuffle new range of products coming out “with an integrated controller for shuffle, as well as an adapter so you can plug in any headphones” and some new colors (silver, pink, green, blue, black). Pricing will be $59 for 2GB and $79 for 4GB.

“One More Thing…”

Oh those 3 little words that we all hang for near the end of any Apple event.

The iPod Nano is getting an integrated video camera AND speaker.

It will sync videos to your computer, into iPhoto on Mac, videos folder on PC. One-click sending to YouTube.

8GB for $149, 6GB for $179, all available today.

The Event ended there….wait, no camera for the iPod Touch??? The announcement we were all waiting for didn’t come…

The case developers had better go back to the drawing board and plug a few “holes”.

We will keep you updated with any further developments regarding today’s event.

Remember, DO NOT UPDATE TO 3.1 OR ITUNES 9 until the Dev-Team confirm it is safe to do so or releases the necessary tools for the Jailbreak and Unlock.

Rumours have surfaced from many sources that Apple is running up against problems in the production of the new iPod Models. It is now no secret that the new iPod range will be equipped with a camera, but a highly reliable source says that Apple are facing technical problems with the camera modules.

Although the new Apple iPod line will almost certainly launch tomorrow the question is whether the iPods themselves will hit the shelves this month.

According to AppleInsider:

A person with a strong track record in predicting Apple’s upcoming product launches recently told AppleInsider that the iPod maker has experienced technical problems (bad parts) with the cameras modules. The person said that it was uncertain whether the new hardware, which has been widely expected to debut at Wednesday’s “Only rock and roll” media-centric event, would make the cut for early September retail distribution.

Hardmac also has a source that has revealed similar issues with the camera modules:

According to one of our reliable source (however, it remains a rumor), Apple is facing problems with the production of the new iPod Touch. The issue would be linked to the new camera module.

As with all rumours, take this with a pinch of salt if you must, but by this time tomorrow we will all know the truth.
