Yak Gets An Update

Tonight saw an update for one of MyGreatiPhone.com’s favourite apps of all time.

Yak is an app that allows users to send messages to each other free of charge using there data allowance.

So far the the app has been able to send messages and photos, but tonights 2.2 release now allows 3GS users to send video and all iPhone users to receive.

The update adds the following:

Improved Interface, Auto add contacts, Crash Fixes for 2G / 3G iPhones.

Once again all I can say about this app is its one of the MyGreatiPhone.com teams favourite apps ever.

3 Billion Apps Downloaded

This Tuesday Apple announced that they have hit a major App Store landmark with download of the over 3 billion downloads.

This may not seem a major break through but if you think that this has only happened in the last 18 months that is some going from iPhone users round the world. (That’s about 142 per person given that Apple have sold about 21 million iPhones since July 2007. Based on Apple selling 6.5 million units per quarter at the end of 2009) .

In an interview with the main man himself; Steve Jobs said:

This is like nothing we’ve ever seen before. The revolutionary App Store offers iPhone and iPod Touch users an experience unlike anything else available on other mobile devices, and we see no signs of the competition catching up anytime soon.

Other companies have also tried to launch App Store’s such as RIM (Blackberry), Palm and Android but none of them have anywhere near as many apps on offer as the Apple App Store. Palm have only 1000 Apps (1% of Apple App Store) and Android have between 15,000 and 20,000 Apps. (20% of Apple App Store) Apple are boasting a hefty 100,000 Apps available for us to choose from.

Skype app gone?

For a lot of people Skype was one of the much awaited app for the iPhone in 2009, but for some reason today the app has disappeared from the App Store.

News from around the net is that the app is gone from US, UK and other international store for reasons that are not known.

So say that the Apple may have fallen out with Skype, others say that’s it because Skype are getting ready to release a new version of the popular app, or is it because that carriers are getting annoyed with the amount of data is being used over their networks by jailbrakers using apps such as 3G Unrestrictor to break the WIFI only ties.

To say that Skype have pulled the app to release a new version sounds strange as this is not how it generally works but I guess that we just wont know till Skype or Apple release something.

UPDATE** Skype posted an update on twitter in the last few hours stating this;

We’ve identified the fault which meant that Skype for iPhone was unavailable for some people – should be back to normal in a few hours

iVideoCamera Released

So after much hoping and lots of jailbraking by iPhone users (esp 2G and 3G users) Apple has approved a new app that allows us to record video on our 2G and 3G iPhones (3GS users your just lucky lol), and it comes in the form of iVideoCamera.

iVideoCamera is available from the app store at a cheap price of just 59p.

Like I said before the app allows you to record video but also save it straight to your camera role (really nice addition I might add). The app also allows you to share you vids via Facebook, Youtube, Vimeo and Twitter.

One thing I love about this app is that the makers Laan Labs have not messed us about in the description of the app they have told us just how it is:

They tell us it records about 3 frames per minute, they tell us we can record for 1 minute only and they say the resolution is low at 160 x 213.

But even though the app has these limitations I still love it, its great to be able to whip out the trusty iPhone and record the kids messing or the dogs in the park and then upload it straight to your favorite social network for all your mates to see.

Ping 1.2 Released!!

Tonight saw a much awaited update to the popular messenger app Ping! But is this update all that the hype is made out to be.

The App Store describes the 1.2 update as having 2 new features;

New Feature: Ability to send photos

New Feature: Ping Address Book.

Well yes in theory it has got 2 new features, but most people will only ever use/see one of them (the address book) and that is because to send photos you will have to pay another 59p.

Now 59p is not a lot and thats not what I am complaining about, but when a dev says that all updates will be free then thats what we expect. Free means free not that you have to pay for what is part of an update.

Sorry Gary Fung but this update is a major fail on your behalf.

Please Gary try and get this sorted or at least mention it in the App Store description!!!!!

Tweetie 2 Has Escaped The App Store Birdcage

So thats it the much awaited Tweetie 2 has been approved by Apple and is now in the app store ready for download now for just £1.79 ($2.99). And once again its been called the best twitter app there is.

So now that its here, what does Tweetie 2 bring to the table. Well a couple of new features that have been added is the ability to translate tweets (especially good when searching for tweets / trends), you can now customize your own profile and now you can save searches to twitter.com directly to name just a few.

Not only does it bring new and exciting features right now atebits the developer states:

This is just the beginning. Tweetie 2 is already built to take advantage of great new features coming from Twitter, so expect updates turning them on soon!

I haven’t had chance to explore all the features in Tweetie 2 but one of the new features that I love is that you can link your contacts directly to your followers / followees so you can directly go to their twitter page in Safari.

Former jailbreak application Snapture now in the App Store

Snapture is a photo application that you longer have to jailbreak devices could install. The application is now also officially in the App Store. In functionality is not much reduced, but you have to pay for the application? 1.59. In Cydia, the paid version of Snapture considerably more expensive: when the Premium version was announced in August last year you had to pay $ 7.99.

What features of Snapture has the following to offer:

* Picture-in-Picture technology, while more recent photo? S right in the viewfinder can view and delete (see middle photo);

Could We See The Very First Video Recording Application Approved By Apple??

The developers at Sabec, a London based company, have issued a press release saying they have submitted a camcorder application to Apple for approval.

Currently only the iPhone 3GS is able to natively record video, but according to Sabec, owners of the 2G and 3G iPhone’s will be able to record videos using their Videocam application.

We don’t have any other info except that Sabec want to keep the price of the application low. It is not known whether the videos will be available for editing natively in 3.x, but judging by the video demo below, we doubt it. Maybe the possibility of emailing them to others, or even yourself, who knows.

We hope that Apple approves the application, but we highly doubt they will due to the “replication” issues Apple will almost certainly have with this app.

[Review] Lullabies – Send Your Baby To Sleep With Your iPhone!

I thought that I would write a review about an app that might help some of the struggling parents out there. The App is called “A World of Lullabies” and it’s in the App store for £1.99.

A Word of Lullabies is a great app that plays a selection of lullabies to your baby to help them sleep.

The app is very simple and allows you to either play the music from one lullaby or to randomly play lullabies for a period of time ranging from 5 minutes to one hour.

There are 10 Lullabies included such as ‘Puff the Magic Dragon’, ‘Hush Little Baby’ and ‘This Old Man’

I have to say that this app is excellent for your baby to fall asleep to. I have used it for about 6 weeks now on my 1 year who has had trouble sleeping for about 7 months.

As soon as he hears the music he lies straight down and is asleep in about 10 minutes.

Modern combat: Sandstorm in the App Store

Modern Combat: Sandstorm, the first first-person shooter from Gameloft is now available in the App Store . You will be member of a team which must try to trace a terrorist devision. To do this you have a plethora of weapons to choose from including automatic machine-guns. The game takes place in the Middle East. The hospital, the sewer, several training camps and the desert belong to the area in which you must complete your mission .
