For those of you who don’t know, FourSquare is an app that will track your friends or family members if they have locations turned on and if they have you previously added as a friend. This service is especially popular amongst social media networks such as Facebook or Twitter, and has been the topic of much debate as to whether to not it gives away too much information of people who do not know how to properly use it. Think: “stalkers”.

Well, today, FourSquare has released a HUGE update for people running iOS 5 on their iDevices. This update will be available under the updates tab in the iTunes AppStore, where you can find any updates to applications you already have installed. This is iDevice 101. If for whatever reason, you do not have it installed, once again, go and search for “FourSquare”, and you’ll be lead to the correct app source.

Here is a list of the following features:

Foursquare Radar is a new feature that lets you know about interesting and cool things nearby, even when your phone is in your pocket. For instance: maybe a group of your friends are hanging out nearby, or you’re around the corner from this amazing Mexican restaurant that’s been on your To-Do List forever. After you turn Foursquare Radar on, your phone will let you know so you won’t miss out.

(WARNING) The Radar feature will drain your battery relatively quickly and FourSquare keeps your location active.

One addition that Apple has been fairly quiet about in the new iPhone 4S, is the handset’s support for Bluetooth 4.0. In fact, as a number of sites have already pointed out, the iPhone 4S is the first smartphone to support the new technology!

Bluetooth 4.0 has some significant advantages over previous versions, but its most important feature has to be its low power consumption which, according to ITProPortal, uses around half of the power of previous Bluetooth profiles.

Although there aren’t yet many accessories available to take advantage of Bluetooth 4.0, it still opens the door for all kinds of possibilities. Headsets and other Bluetooth accessories are currently limited by their excessive battery drain.

Bluetooth 4.0 could also be a way of payment. If Apple wanted to, they could start a whole new NFC revolution. But with Bluetooth, which would actually work better IMO.

Well boys and girls, we all knew that it was coming. Just a few days ago, the iPhone Dev-Team released an updated version of their popular redsn0w jailbreaking tool which can now currently jailbreak the OS4 beta 4 software released by Apple. This build is a much more stable version than the previously jailbreakable 4.0 beta 1, but we still cannot stress enough that that for the average consumer, this is not the ideal situation. These jailbreaks come with a lot of conditions, such as the fact that it will only work with a Mac, on the 3G, on a device with a UDID registered to Apple on one of their developer accounts. It WILL upgrade your baseband meaning that you will not be able to unlock, and as it is still an unfinished product, it WILL give you errors and behave sporadically. That is why this is a BETA release. If you want stability, then please wait for the official version (or at least the “GM” gold master) to be released so that you can enjoy all of the benefits that 4.0 has to offer.

Now with that being said, here are the pertinent details;

The latest Redsn0w jailbreak tool only works on iPhone 3G.

This beta version does not perform hactivation. Users will require an Apple UDID to get past the activation screen in iTunes

Redsn0w 0.9.5 beta 4 works only on Mac OSX and does not have a PC version of the software. This was intended for developers, and in order to be a developer, you must have a MAC computer.

Do NOT use Redsn0w if you rely on an unlocked iPhone. This is because the iPhone OS 4.0 beta 4 contains a baseband update, which cannot be software unlocked. You have been warned!

And as always, the obligatory download link: http://wikee.iphwn.org/howto:rsbeta

An iPhone developer called DarkMalloc posted a video today showing an iPhone 3G running 4.0 beta 1, jailbroken and using Multitasking! But hold on….Apple said we can’t do that!!

Unlike the jailbreak methods shown by MuscleNerd and GeoHot last week, this one claims not to use a new exploit, but update the device in such a way that the jailbreak is kept intact.

This method has been worked on by DarkMalloc, lilstevie and iH8Sn0w. For reasons explained below, this method will NOT be released to the general populous;

1. It cannot restore on a PC, only a Mac can. There is no way to make it run on a PC.
2. Its very very buggy
3. This is meant for developers to test new api’s.
4. it has a 58% success restore rate.
5. It would promote more piracy. Meaning users would illegally download the ipsw and bypass the UDID trap.

It has been a long time since there has been so many new ways to jailbreak all surfacing at the same time, but this just means that Apple has their work cut out to find them. Like you, we hope they don’t and miss at least one exploit.

Below is the video posted by DarkMalloc.

So more great news for those disgruntled owners of older iDevices. It has been discovered that the new multitasking feature in OS 4.0 CAN be used on older devices.

Although we understand why Apple has chosen to limit this feature to the 2 devices with the improved processor (iPhone 3Gs/iPod Touch 3), a lot of users were left feeling somewhat left out in the cold by the announcement yesterday.

All is not lost though, a guy by the name of cdevwill posted the tweet below briefly explaining the simple mod needed to activate multitasking on older devices;

<img src="http://www.mygreatiphone.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/l_568_247_42ECF86C-65EE-41EC-9EE5-719E588227FD.jpeg" alt="" class="aligncenter width="400" height="172" />

Now we imagine this will work, but will it put huge strain on the slower processors? Will it cause an increase in crashes? We simply don’t know yet, but it must give hope to those still reeling from Apples decision.

We will keep you updated on any other developments.

At 10:00 am today, Apple held an event to give developers a sneak peek at iPhone OS 4.0. Over the last few months there has been much speculation and a laundry list of hopes for what the next installment of iPhone OS will bring.

As Steve Jobs took the stage, applause roared out. As always Steve began by boasting some statistics for the iPad and App Store etc. He then went on to say there are 1500 new API’s for developers and 100 new features for users. He goes through the top 7 new features;

1. Multi-tasking

Yes that’s right we have all been waiting for this one!! iPhone OS 4.0 now has Multi-tasking, and it is brilliantly done. With a simple double-tap of the home button the screen raises up to reveal a scrollable dock showing all your currently open apps, clicking an app opens it up to the exact point you left it. This means that games will automatically pause and continue where you left off.

This is also great for apps like Skype, who have developed their app further so you can receive calls while in any other app, and you get a pop-up to let you know someone is calling.

This will also background the Location function meaning that apps like TomTom can run in the background and still alert you for the next turn!

Apple states that there implementation of Multi-tasking is designed specifically not to drain the battery and to preserve ram, so as not to slow things down too much. Sadly, this feature will only be available to iPhone 3Gs and iPt3 users due to the processor needed to run it, but OS 4.0 will be available for all devices.

2. Folders

Folders looks awesome!! Just like Categories for Jailbroken users but much better (Obviously Apple have been keeping a close eye on the jailbreak scene).

To create a folder you simply push an icon to make it wiggle and drag it over the top of another app that you want to make a folder with. The folder is then created and automatically named according to what genre the apps sit in the App Store! You can also rename the folder AND place it anywhere you want, even the dock. The folders icon then changes to a multi-icon. What’s more is that you are no longer bound by the 180 app limitation, you can now have over 1200 apps!!

You may have noticed that the demo iPhone appears to have a custom homescreen wallpaper, that’s because it IS a custom wallpaper, another new feature in OS 4.0.

3. Enhanced Mail.app

Can anyone say UNIFIED MAILBOX!!! At long last Apple has done what they should have done from the start. You can now view all of your email, no matter what account it be, all in one mailbox viewer. There is also a fast inbox switcher if you want to focus on just one account.

You can also now have more than one Exchange account, organize emails by thread, and open attachments with apps!!

4. iBooks

Yes thats right, Apple will introduce the iBooks app for iPhone too. A great little ebook reader that you can use to purchase books from the iBookstore and read anywhere, plus you get a free copy of Winnie the Pooh!! Wow! Lol even Jobs wasn’t too enthusiastic about this one.

You will also be able to sync your books wirelessly between platforms too.

5. Enterprise

Not much to say on this one really.

Better data protection, mobile device management, wireless app distribution etc.

Support for multiple Exchange accounts, Exchange Server 2010, and new VPN options.

All of this just helps to make the iPhone one of the safest and most secure smart phones on the market.

6. Game Center

This is basically Apples version of XBox Live. Yes you heard me, Apple has created their very own social gaming network, complete with the ability to invite friends to play, Leaderboards, Achievements and Matchmaking. This is pretty huge!!

Scott Forstall then goes on to reel off some stats compared to the Nintendo DS and PSP with regards to games etc.

7. iAd

This one we had heard whispers about prior to the event. Apple has developed their own mobile advertising system. Steve had this to say, “We have a lot of free or reasonably priced apps… we like that, but our devs have to find ways to make money. So our devs are putting ads into apps, and for lack of a better way to say it, we think most of this kind of advertising sucks.” Ouch for Google there!!

Steve went on to say, “When you look at ads on a phone, it’s not like a desktop. On a desktop, search is where it’s at. But on mobile devices, that hasn’t happened. Search is not happening on phones; people are using apps. And this is where the opportunity is to deliver advertising is.” and, “The average user spends over 30 minutes every day using apps on their phone. If we said we wanted to put an ad up every 3 minutes, that’s 10 ads per device per day. That would be 1b ad opportunities per day.”

Basically the ads won’t yank you out of your app and open Safari, everything is contained and viewable from inside the app, this certainly puts a new take on things, for the better if you ask us.

The iAd network is built into the iPhone OS, so the possibilities are endless.

“Because iAd is in the iPhone OS itself, we have figured out how to do interactive and video content without ever taking you out of the app.” Steve explained. “For devs to add this to their apps is really simple. They can do it in an afternoon. Apple is going to sell and host the ads, and we’re going to do a 60/40 split.” Sounds good to us! Steve went on to demo an interactive ad for Toy Story 3. It works seamlessly and looks great, heck, clicking ads might just become enjoyable rather than a hardship! This could change the way we advertise and view ads via mobile phones forever!!

Summary

So we have seen 7 out 100 new features, and some of them were well worth the wait!!

Multi-tasking – AT LAST!!

Folders – Categories on steroids!

Enhanced Email – No longer will the Mail.app be the bane of our lives!

iBooks – enough said

Enterprise – Yawn

Gamer Center – WOW!!

iAd – Impressive!!

To clarify, OS 4.0 will be available for <strike>all devices</strike> iPhone 3G/3Gs and iPt2G/3G this summer, but sadly due to processor requirements, some features, most notably Multi-tasking, will ONLY be available to iPhone 3Gs and iPt3 users.

Just like last year we expect the bidding to commence for slots on developers accounts for the beta releases of OS 4.0, and just like last time we remind you that a jailbreak will NOT be released for ANY beta firmware versions for obvious reasons. So steer clear of the temptation if you rely on an unlock, or simply cannot live without your jailbreak.

If you manage to get your hands on a copy drop by our forum and let us know what else is new, we will also see if we can get at least one device running it.

Thanks to EnGadget for the Images.

That’s right, y’all. We’re back at it, and this time we’ve received some exclusive iPhone OS 4.0 details from one of our trusty Apple connects.

Here are some iPhone OS 4.0 features, according to our guy:

•There will be multi-touch gestures OS-wide. (Would make sense for that as the rumored OS for the iTablet is close if not the same as the iPhone)

•“A few new ways” to run applications in the background — multitasking.

•Many graphical and UI changes to make navigating through the OS easier and more efficient. We haven’t had this broken down, but we can only hope for improved notifications, a refreshed homescreen, etc.

•The update will supposedly be available for only the iPhone 3G and 3GS, but will “put them ahead in the smartphone market because it will make them more like full-fledged computers” more than any other phone to date. Everyone is “really excited.”

•The last piece of information is the most vague, but apparently there will be some brand new syncing ability for the contacts and calendar applications.

This is really exciting as we are getting closer as more details and rumors hit down. Not great news for 1st Gen iPhone and iPod Touch owners though?

Rick Broida with CNet’s iPhone Atlas said Friday that he received an e-mail from a “prominent app developer” regarding an update to the iPhone operating system. “Just wanted to give you a heads up that we’ve submitted an updated app for the new iPhone OS 4.0 software,” the e-mail allegedly said.

Its was rumoured earlier this month that the 27th Jan event could see the release of the 4.0 firmware. Rumours have even stated that the new version of the SDK includes a “simulator” that makes it easy for developers to adapt to different screen resolutions.

This week, one rumor claimed that Apple has not issued any updates for the iPhone in some time because the next version has many tablet-related references that the company did not want to leak in advance of its planned unveiling.

Source info thanks to AppleInsider.

BGR has found traces that suggest that Apple is testing OS 3.1.3, a minor bug fix release, and OS 4.0, which will have to be a monumental release to keep up with Android and Googles new Nexus.

There is still 6 months until the expected release of 4.0 and the new iPhone and we will keep you updated of any updates.

As always, when the 3.1.3 update hits down, all jailbreakers are reminded NOT to update until the Dev-Team confirm it is safe to do so or release the necessary tools.
