Merry Christmas from the iPhone Devteam and the Chronic devteam it would seem! After Pod2g sent them his jailbreak, they have put it into redsn0w 0.9.10 and PwnageTool, and the chronic devteam put it into a Cydia package (the same set of exploits is in all three).

This is for Non A5 devices only, so you must be on a iPhone3GS, iPhone4, iPhone4-CDMA, iPad1, iPod touch 3G, iPod touch 4G, running iOS 5.0.1.

Download RedSnow 0.9.10b1 on Mac or Windows (run as administrator).

As mentioned earlier, @pod2g has spent months working on all the exploits and tricks in this untether, and many of you may be wondering how you can send donations. Although the iPhone devteam itself doesn’t take donations, we thought it was appropriate to provide a link at the end of the redsn0w run for you to more easily donate directly to @pod2g if you wish (alternatively, you can go right here). There’s a link in the Cydia package for donating to the chronic devteam for the Cydia version of @pod2g’s untether.

@pod2g is now looking for a way to extend this to A5 devices. Because those devices cannot use geohot’s limera1n exploit to inject the untether, they require exploits above and beyond those used for this release. Keep following pod2g on twitter or his blog for any progress reports!

Well done, Pod2G!

We’ve seen many speculations now and even posted that Apple’s upcoming ‘Photostream’ application shows an iPhone that doesn’t look like a current iPhone. Well, according to the design specs that were leaked by MacRumors.com, the iPhone is indeed to be a tiny bit wider and have a bigger screen.

If you have forgotten, the main dimensions of the iPhone 4 are 4.5″ x 2.31″. So this iPhone in the plan is due to be a bit shorter but also a bit wider.

Personally from that plan I like it. I don’t like how round it seems – hated that on the 3GS after a while – but the fact that the top isn’t as stupidly huge anymore and there isn’t much wasted space is brilliant. And a bigger screen is also a bonus.

To compare, MacRumours has got hold of an apparent iPhone 5 case made to these designs and put it on an iPhone 4 to see the size difference.

There are still reports however that there is to be still a 3.5-inch screen like the current iPhone 4. Maybe that is the iPhone “4S” and the 4-inch screen is the iPhone 5? I know which i’d be getting.

We hope (and it is apparent that we will see) that there is an announcement to be made by Apple later this month, however no details for this have been leaked yet. The phone is also rumoured to go on sale either October 7th or October 14th. Or, 7th in the US and 14th in the EU.

Either way – We are still playing guessing games. Wish Apple would just shout out and say “check out this sexy bitch” and get on with it… I want a new phone. I get bored too easily.

Earlier today a report came in that the iPhone 3GS is outselling every other phone on the market, apart from the iPhone 4 which came the year after.

Currently the iPhone 4 is in the number one selling spot, followed by iPhone 3GS according to a report by NPD group.

The 3GS was reduced in price in January this year by AT&T to $49 with a 2 year contact.

This is really something for a 2 year old device. The question is if Apple keep it on and the bottom of the range device will it then become the 3rd best selling phone in America with the iPhone 4 coming second and the iPhone 5 at the top spot.

Let us know what you think in the comments below.

Earlier today we blogged how the iPhone 3GS could become Apples new lower end contact free when they launch the new iPhone 4S / 5.

Something i’ve always wondered and never quite found the answer myself…

Why do we use cases on our iDevices?

I’ve spent a stupid amount of money trying to find a case I like that doesn’t get in the way, keeps the beauty of the device (iPhone 4 in my case) and still looks good itself.
It’s not been a good search.

I’ve had Casemate’s Pixel thing, a Vapour4 bumper (which is my favorite case ever), few other Casemate cases and as much as I liked them, I always found a flaw.

I spend all this money on an iPhone 4 and now i’m spending money on covering it up when there really is no need to. So eventually I scrapped all cases and gone back to running my iPhone naked and let me tell you – It’s bloody awesome.

You see the natural beauty of the device itself. It’s crafted so nicely compared to over phones that feel like they can break far too easy. Why do we cover that up?
We seem to have got into this thing of “I have an iDevice, I need a case to stop it getting scratched”. But if you’re not a numpty, you won’t scratch it. And it is quite resiliant to being scratched itself.

I’ve been running mine naked for a few months now and it has no scratches. It gets covered in fingerprints and dirt but give it a wipe and it’s fine again. And it’s quite shocking that there are no scratches because I always put my phone into jeans, it always gets hit by a zip from my jacket or a metal bit on my jeans and its never got a mark.
I’ve even unplugged my earphones from it but left the connector hanging around in my pocket with my iPhone and even that didn’t scratch it.

I’ve also dropped it a few times, mainly on carpet but I have and there has been no smash no mark nothing broken off.

You also fall in love with how it fits in the hand nicely. It’s not too small and it’s not too big, it just fits right. The buttons are easy to access and find in a pocket and it doesn’t feel like you are holding a brick in your pocket like a lot of cases end up doing.

I have seen one persons iPhone who also runs theirs naked and it had a bit of a scuff around the edge where it got dropped quite high into a chair leg or something. But it’s so small you don’t notice it and lets be honest, nothing will stay perfect forever.

So, I say we should step back from the cases. Give your new device a try without a case. See how it goes. Enjoy it rather than being cautious with it.

Looks like the rumors came true finally – iOS 4.3 is now available to download. Hit up iTunes to update.

Jailbreakers: Stay away! This breaks MobileSubstrate.

Features in iOS4.3 include:

More ways to AirPlay.

Get even more play out of AirPlay — the wireless technology that lets you stream content from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to your HDTV via Apple TV.1 In addition to music, movies, and photos, AirPlay now streams video from your Photos app. So you can shoot a home video and instantly share it with everyone in the room. Even AirPlay-enabled apps and websites get the big-screen treatment with iOS 4.3. And if your photos are the feature presentation, you can play a slideshow with all the stunning themes available on Apple TV.

Safari Performance

As you surf the web, your fingers will love the responsiveness of the new Nitro JavaScript engine powering Safari. It runs JavaScript up to twice as fast as in iOS 4.2.2 Which means you get more speed behind each page load. And sites with lots of interactive features can appear on your screen even faster.

iTunes Home Sharing

Now you can play your entire iTunes library from anywhere in the house. If it’s on your Mac or PC, you can play it on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch over a shared Wi-Fi network.3 And not just music. Watch a movie or TV show. Play a podcast. Or listen to an audiobook. On whichever device you want — without having to download or sync.

iPad Side Switch

Customize the switch on the side of your iPad to lock the screen rotation or mute the volume. So you can lock your iPad display in landscape or portrait. Or quickly go from volume on to volume off. Just configure the side switch in Settings to toggle between your options.

Personal Hotspot for iPhone 4

On the road, in an airport, at the park — now you can bring Wi-Fi with you wherever you go. Download iOS 4.3 on your iPhone 4, and the next time you find yourself without access to Wi-Fi but in 3G territory, enable Personal Hotspot and share your cellular data connection with your Mac, PC, iPad, or other Wi-Fi-capable device. You can share your connection with up to five devices at once over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and USB — with up to three of those connections using Wi-Fi.4 Every connection is password protected and secure. And it’s power friendly, too. iPhone detects when your Personal Hotspot is no longer in use and turns it off to save battery life.

The Dev Team have just released a tweet to say that an unlock for the iPhone 3G and 3GS running 4.2.1 has been released.

This unlock goes about things in an old but new type of way.

The unlock uses the exploit that was found in the BaseBand 05.13.04 (AT+XAPP command), well Apple patched that exploit for the iPhone firmware but left the exploit open in the iPad firmware 3.2.2. This iPad firmware uses the BaseBand 06.15.00 and that is where the exploit lyes and since the Pad baseband is built for the exact same baseband chip as the iPhone3G/3GS they’re fully compatible.

For the unlock to work you will need to make sure that you gave the iPad firmware available on your PC / Mac you can get it from Apple themselves right here.

There are a few things that you will need to make note of before you apply this unlock. The below is a warning from the Dev-Team themselves….

WARNING — YOU DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK! PLEASE UNDERSTAND THE CONSEQUENCES OF UPDATING TO 06.15.

There is no way to come back down from 06.15, and there’s no hiding the baseband version from Apple. You’ll be voiding your warranty in a very obvious way.

If some future baseband comes out with a critical fix, you won’t be able to update to it if it remains down in the 05.xx sequence (then again, you wouldn’t update to it if you wanted to keep your unlock anyway).

Starting with FW 4.2.1 if you have 06.15 on your iPhone you won’t ever be able to restore to stock firmware (it will fail). You’ll need to only restore to custom IPSWs (then again, if you’re unlocker you should already be doing that).

Certainly don’t update to 06.15 if you don’t need to! Only do this if you need the unlock and you’re stuck on 05.14 or 05.15, and you’re willing to assume the above risks.

Both RedSn0w and PwnageTool have been updated for this unlock ….

First up is “PwnageTool 4.1.3 Unlock Edition”. It has a special dialog box which will ask you if you want to update to the iPad baseband. You must already have the iPad 3.2.2 IPSW on your computer (see the above link)….so just point PwnageTool at it (or let it find it on its own if you’re in “simple” mode).

Directly after PwnageTool 4.1.3 is available, the official ultrasn0w repo http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com will be updated with ultrasn0w 1.2, which covers iPhone 4 baseband 01.59.00 and iPhone 3G/3GS basebands 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.12.01, 05.13.04 and now 06.15.00.

Finally, we’ll release an update to redsn0w today for those without Macs and can’t run PwnageTool. The new redsn0w will give you the option to update your baseband to 06.15 too.

So thats the 3GS and 3G users taken care of so now we are just waiting on a iPhone 4 unlock to come out.

Remember to make sure to head over to the Dev-Teams Blog to read the full article and once you have read it make sure you read it again.

Thanks again to the Dev-Team for finding these unlocks out for us all.

I for one have been waiting intently for this update, but more so, as I own an iPhone 4, for the team at Skype to add video call capabilities.

Just last week Skype removed their service from Fring, an up and coming VoIP service provider. This was due to Fring allowing iPhone 4 owners to perform video calls over both wifi and 3G, something that Skype seem to be taking longer to complete. The reason this sounds so downright dastardly is because it is. It’s a simple case of trying to cull the competition. <img src="http://www.mygreatiphone.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/p_960_640_AE94FD99-9935-434E-80B3-1CB991DCAAC0.jpeg" alt="" class="alignright width="150" height="200" />

This update, however, still comes as a welcome addition to an already satisfying application, both aesthetically and functionally. Things can only get better (albeit slowly) from here.

Let us know about your experiences with Skype and how you find these great new additions.

**UPDATE** Reports are coming in that this update is not sitting well with jailbroken devices!! Apparently it crashes back to the springboard when opened. We will keep you updated as more news comes in.

**UPDATE 2** MGiP team member Liverpoolfc69 has found that the update hasn’t crashed on his iPhone 3Gs running 3.1.2 jailbroken with spirit, in fact it won’t update at all on his iPhone, he had to download and sync from his PC. He also reported that the bug still exists that does not allow automatic sign in to be checked in the settings for Skype, the app just hangs at the sign in screen.

First of all I would like to say a huge thank you to the guys over at Case-Mate for sending us this Hybrid Tough Case to review.

Well now that the thanks are out of the way, lets get down to business – the review.

The Case-Mate Hybrid Tough case is a case like no other, it is made up of 2 parts for extra protection.

First things first, what does it come in and what do we get with it? Well the box is made from a see-through plastic with the Case-Mate logo at the top. You can see straight away what you are buying when you pick this package from the shelf.

When opening the packaging you are greeted with the case and and a little card what explains some of the features of the case, under the card is a little extra surprise. As well as the case you also get a cleaning cloth, screen protector and applicator.

So that’s the “what do I get for my money” here are the bits you really need to know…..

So like I said the case comes in two parts, the first part being a silicone skin that completely wraps round the back and side of the case to absorb impact. This part of the case also helps prevent small particles of dust clinging to the back of the iPhone. This silicone skin has cut outs for the docking port, mic, speaker, silence switch and headphone jack. The power button and volume rockers are covered by the case.

Once this part has been applied, you can then but the outer shell on. This outer shell is made from ABS plastic that is also impact resistant.

The outer shell covers only the back of the iPhone and wraps slightly around the side, this then has cut outs for the silence and volume switches.

The outer case is marked with the Case-Mate name and logo and has a textured feel to it, making it easier to grip.

Another great feature about this case is that the two sections can be mixed and matched to truly show the real you.

Head over to the Case-Mate site to select your colours. There are 9 silicone skin colours to choose from and 8 outer shell colours.

The case costs $29.99 (about £20) and is available from the Case-Mate website.

Overall I truly believe that this is a great case for people that live an active life-style. It does make the iPhone a little thicker, but if you are hiking for example its nice to know that your iPhone is well protected if you accidentally drop it.

As you can see from the picture the MoviePeg is a little device that look just like a Peg. The Great thing about this peg though is that it will hold your iPhone 3G / 3GS.

The MoviePeg is a simple yet elegant stand that holds your iPhone in both a horizontal and vertical position.

The little device is made of a rubbery plastic type material that slides on the side of your iPhone. It is designed ergonomically to fit the curves of the iPhone, this then allows the phone to sit securely

When using the MoviePeg the cut out that the iPhone slides into is just perfect, it is not to tight and not to loose.

The MoviePeg is available in 6 colours: Black, Yellow, Green, Blue, Pink and Red.

One of the best things about the MoviePeg is that the cost is really low. The device only costs £4.99 plus P+P. MoviePeg ship worldwide.

One of the main reasons to use the MoviePeg is to watch movies without having to hold your iPhone, but this stand can also be used to turn your iPhone into a clock with apps like Night Stand or just to hold your iPhone at your desk.

Check out the vid below to see more…

Click here to view the embedded video.

I think this is a great little stand that is cheap and easy to carry around with an elegant design, and thats why I’m giving its a 4 star rating.

Tonight the Dev-Team have released a jailbreak for the 3.1 firmware but with a twist. The Jailbreak is only for the iPhone 2G, 3G and iPod Touch 1G.

The Jailbreak process is just for Mac users at the moment so windows users will have to wait until custom .ipsw files are made and uploaded by kind Mac users or till the Dev-Team release a windows program.

People considering using the Jailbreak will want to read the post by the Dev-Team carefully here.

Below is a quick snippet:

This is the low down on our tools for use with the 3.1 firmware from Apple, please read the whole post in full before attempting anything. Because of changes with Apple’s update techniques this will be a multipart release, starting with the initial release of PwnageTool for Mac OS X – this application supports the iPhone 1st Generation (2G), The iPhone 3G and the iPod touch 1G. NB: THIS DOES NOT SUPPORT THE 3GS OR NEW IPOD TOUCH. redsn0w for Mac OS X and Windows will follow sometime in the near future, please don’t bug us about it – we’ll release when we have something ready.

GOLDEN RULE:If you are using a 3G iPhone with ultrasn0w and rely on ultrasn0w to obtain cellular service, then you should only upgrade to 3.1 with a PwnageTool created .ipsw. – Stay away from Apple’s direct updates as described here and here please get up to speed on the whole subject by reading the information contained in these posts.

If you have an original iPhone (1st generation) then 3.1 unlock works with this PwnageTool release. iPhone 3G users upgrading to 3.1 will need to continue using ultrasn0w with a PwnageTool created 3.1 .ipsw

Please read all parts of this post before downloading and using these tools.

Read items 1, 2 and 3 again and again.

At the bottom of this post are the bittorrent files for the 3.1 capable version of PwnageTool.

This app is suitable for the recent 3.1 release.

This version of PwnageTool will NOT work for the iPhone 3GS.

PwnageTool WILL ONLY work for Original iPhone (1st Generation), Original iPod touch (1st Generation) and the iPhone 3G.

According to iH8sn0w it is still possible to find out the IBSS and IBEC certificates from your iPhone 3GS, even if you accidentally upgraded to OS 3.1. The IBSS and IBEC certificates are important (even essential) for the downgrade to OS 3.0. They are probably necessary in any jailbreak of OS 3.1 when it becomes available. Who is in possession of an iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G or iPhone with 3GS OS 3.0/3.0.1 should not follow these steps, they are only for the iPhone 3GS with OS 3.1.

Again, the following steps are for 3GS iPhone owners who accidentally upgraded to OS 3.1 and still have to find out their certificates. To find the certificates enter the following steps:

1. Identify the ECID of your iPhone 3GS.
2. Go to purplera1n.com, paste the ECID in the black input field under the correct logo (Windows or Mac) and press Enter. Note: This only works in Safari or Firefox, not Internet Explorer! Download the file that appears.
3. Send the file by email to ih8sn0wydaz@gmail.com
4. You should get a reply from this addresswith three certificate files.

These three files should make it possible to downgrade to OS 3.0. Saurik is busy making a down-grader, but has posted on twitter that he may start collecting certificate files from iPhone 3G[S]‘s running 3.1 within the next week. On the subject of a jailbreak for OS 3.1: both the iPhone Dev Team and the Chronic Dev Team are busy, so it shouldn’t be too long until we see a release.
