This is fantastic news for iPhone 4 owners, especially in the wake of the new userland jailbreak released yesterday.

My3G offers in app notifications when it switches to “wifi” and allows you to be alerted when an app is checking to see if there is a wifi connection so you can choose to activate it.

My3G is available through the Rock App and through Cydia via ModMyi for $3.99.

<img src="http://www.mygreatiphone.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/l_400_400_32215D09-4C89-4377-AC9D-4B60B165E71A.jpeg" alt="" class="alignleft width="150" height="150" /> Back in may, Skype released version 2.0 of their iPhone application which allowed users to use the service over 3G rather that wifi only. This release was accompanied by the news that by the end of August, there would be a small monthly fee in order to continue using the service over 3G.

Skype has just announced however, that they intend to keep this service free for all it’s users;

At Skype, we believe that better call quality and better availability (which is achieved with an app capable of multitasking and/or making calls over 3G) lead to increased call frequency and longer calls. We also believe that the mobile world is in a period of significant change, for example, with some operators starting to move to tiered pricing models.

In light of that, we no longer have plans to charge a supplement to make calls over 3G. We’re delighted to make it easier for you to talk for even longer and do even more together using Skype.

This announcement comes in the wake of much criticism which caused them to postpone the planned charges back to the end of 2010 originally. This news will come as a great comfort to all users of Skype, especially as all new iPhone 4 users are waiting with baited breath for the inclusion of video calling capabilities.

We will be back with news of any developments regarding this when it is made public.

I for one have been waiting intently for this update, but more so, as I own an iPhone 4, for the team at Skype to add video call capabilities.

Just last week Skype removed their service from Fring, an up and coming VoIP service provider. This was due to Fring allowing iPhone 4 owners to perform video calls over both wifi and 3G, something that Skype seem to be taking longer to complete. The reason this sounds so downright dastardly is because it is. It’s a simple case of trying to cull the competition. <img src="http://www.mygreatiphone.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/p_960_640_AE94FD99-9935-434E-80B3-1CB991DCAAC0.jpeg" alt="" class="alignright width="150" height="200" />

This update, however, still comes as a welcome addition to an already satisfying application, both aesthetically and functionally. Things can only get better (albeit slowly) from here.

Let us know about your experiences with Skype and how you find these great new additions.

**UPDATE** Reports are coming in that this update is not sitting well with jailbroken devices!! Apparently it crashes back to the springboard when opened. We will keep you updated as more news comes in.

**UPDATE 2** MGiP team member Liverpoolfc69 has found that the update hasn’t crashed on his iPhone 3Gs running 3.1.2 jailbroken with spirit, in fact it won’t update at all on his iPhone, he had to download and sync from his PC. He also reported that the bug still exists that does not allow automatic sign in to be checked in the settings for Skype, the app just hangs at the sign in screen.

As we are all aware, the WWDC conference is due to be held on June 7th, where Apple will be announcing the iPhone 4G/HD.

Now if we do see the iPhone 4th gen model released, this will mean that there could potentially be 3 generations of iPhone on the market at the same time, the 3G, 3GS and 4G/HD. This is very unlikely to be the case.

Now one thing that is most likely to happen is that that the 3G iPhone will be discontinued and the 16GB 3GS will be the base model iPhone.

The is what seems to be happening. Rumours are circulating that Apple have stopped supplying AT&T stores with the 3G, and O2 have made it impossible to purchase the 3G online.

Engadget now also report that Walmart are selling the iPhone 3GS for $97 (contract)

This is not shocking as the 3G has low Ram and is now 2 Years old, even Apple themselves have stopped supporting the model in its entirety through the OS 4.0 release (no multitasking for 3G users).

Well this past week we have seen a stable(ish) release of Google’s Android software working on the iPhone 3G.

The Android Software will not totally replace the iPhone OS but will dual boot using something called iBoot.

Now here is the disclaimer….

MyGreatiPhone.com can not and will not be held responsible if you screw up you iPhone. This will only work on the 2G and 3G iPhone running firmwares betwen 2.0 and 3.1.2. You also have to be jailbroken with Redsn0w, Blackra1n, or PwnageTool. You try this at your own risk!!!

Here are a few small details about the release:

The phone will be usable, it won’t be fast. If you do something unexpected (such as forcing the iPhone off), there is a small chance that you may end up restoring your device.

Another bit of information that you need to know,:

This is not for faint hearted, you need to know a few thing about the iPhone and be comfortable using a command-line interface.

The following instructions are thanks to PCWORLD.com

Requirements

1. A first-generation iPhone or an iPhone 3G with firmware versions between 2.0 and 3.1.2, jailbroken with Redsn0w, Blackra1n, or PwnageTool. If you already updated your handset to 3.1.3 or to a 4.0 beta, you must use PwnageTool to create a jailbroken 3.1.2 .ipsw file to restore down to.

Note that I am explicitly excluding the iPhone 3GS, all iPod Touchmodels, and the iPad. This hack will not work with those devices (yet). I am also explicitly excluding iPhone OS 3.1.3 and all of the 4.0 betas. It will not work with theSpirit jailbreak, either.

If you haven’t yet jailbroken your iPhone, don’t worry–it’s a simple process that consists mainly of pressing buttons on the device when prompted and clicking the next button in a wizard. I humbly recommend Redsn0w, since I wrote much of the code for that program.

2. A 32-bit Linux system or virtual machine (I recommend Ubuntu). See “How to Easily Install Ubuntu Linux on Any PC” for instructions if you don’t already have Ubuntu.

Although much of the process can be conducted on any machine, one of the tools involved (called ‘oibc’) has not yet been ported to Windows. In addition, the binaries I provide are compiled on a 32-bit Ubuntu machine.

All of the utilities compile for Linux and Mac, however, so if you’re feeling adventurous, compile the sources atgithub.com/planetbeing/iphonelinux andgithub.com/planetbeing/xpwn instead of using the binaries.

3. The prebuilt images and binaries; the exact files you use depend on whether you have a first-generation iPhone or an iPhone 3G.

4. The iPhone OS 3.1.2 .ipsw file for your device, namely either iPhone1,1_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw or iPhone1,2_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw. Chances are, you already have this file somewhere on your computer, but if you need it, you can download it.

5. The firmware for the Marvell WLAN chip inside the iPhone. Go to the URL, and on the right side of the page you should see a drop-down menu labeled ‘Choose your platform’. Select Linux 2.6 – Fedora from the drop-down menu and click the Search button underneath. Download the file labeled SD-8686-LINUX26-SYSKT-9.70.3.p24-26409.P45-GPL. You’ll get a file called SD-8686-LINUX26-SYSKT-9.70.3.p24-26409.P45-GPL.zip.

Step by Step Setup

1. On the Linux machine, create a folder namedfirmware in your home directory.

2. Extract SD-8686-FEDORA26FC6-SYSKT-GPL-9.70.3.p24-26409.P45.tar from SD-8686-LINUX26-SYSKT-9.70.3.p24-26409.P45-GPL.zip to a temporary folder.

3. Extract FwImage/helper_sd.bin and FwImage/sd8686.bin from SD-8686-FEDORA26FC6-SYSKT-GPL-9.70.3.p24-26409.P45.tar and put them inside your ‘firmware’ folder.

4. Rename helper_sd.bin to sd8686_helper.bin.

You have your WLAN firmware at this point. Now for the multitouch firmware.

5. On the Linux machine, create a folder named idroidin your home directory and extract utils/dripwn from the prebuilt tarball (.tar archive) you downloaded into it.

6. Copy or move the 3.1.2 .ipsw file you obtained from Apple’s Website into the same ‘idroid’ folder as dripwn.

7. Start a command-line shell (Terminal under Ubuntu) and navigate to the ‘idroid’ folder you created. You can type cd ~/idroid to do this.

8. Go to this page if you have an iPhone 3G or this page if you have an older iPhone. Copy the VFDecrypt key.

9. In the shell you started earlier, if you have a first-generation iPhone, type the following:

./dripwn iPhone1,1_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw [the VFDecrypt key you copied]

If you have a iPhone 3G, type the following:

./dripwn iPhone1,2_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw [the VFDecrypt key you copied]

10. After a while, the command will finish and you will have zephyr_main.bin, zephyr_aspeed.bin, and zephyr2.bin in your ‘idroid’ folder. Move these files into the ‘firmware’ folder.

You now have all the files needed for Android, and you can begin installing it.

11. If you haven’t already, install the OpenSSH tool on your iPhone via Cydia.

12. If you just installed OpenSSH, connect to your iPhone via SSH, log in as root with the password alpine, and type passwd root to change the password for root. Then, enterpasswd mobile to change the password for the mobile user.

Don’t skip this step. All of the iPhone worms out there affect you only if you haven’t changed the SSH password from the default.

13. Extract prebuilt/android.img.gz, prebuilt/cache.img, prebuilt/ramdisk.img, prebuilt/system.img, prebuilt/userdata.img, and zImage from the prebuilt tarball.

14. Use the ‘scp’ command or an SFTP client to upload all of these files into the /private/var folder on the iPhone.

You can use these commands on Linux, if you wish to use scp instead of an SFTP graphical-interface client. Assuming you’re in the same folder as the files, enter:

scp android.img.gz root@[ip address of iPhone]:/private/var/
scp cache.img root@[ip address of iPhone]:/private/var/
scp ramdisk.img root@[ip address of iPhone]:/private/var/
scp system.img root@[ip address of iPhone]:/private/var/
scp userdata.img root@[ip address of iPhone]:/private/var/
scp zImage root@[ip address of iPhone]:/private/var/

15. Using the SFTP client or scp, create a folder calledfirmware in the /private/var folder on the iPhone; afterward, upload all the files from the ‘firmware’ folder you created earlier to it.

If the ‘firmware’ folder you created earlier is inside your home directory, you can use the following command:

scp -r ~/firmware/ root@[ip address of iPhone]:/private/var/firmware

16. Reboot your iPhone. As a safety precaution, check to make sure that the files are still present after the reboot and that they all have the right sizes. An incorrect file size is one that does not exactly match the source file size (for example, system.img is not 71327744 bytes, android.img.gz is not 2161556 bytes, or zImage is not 2364280 bytes on the 3G or not 2356044 bytes on the older iPhone).

Many people have trouble with this process because not all of the files reached their iPhone in one piece.

17. Extract utils/oibc, utils/loadibec, and prebuilt/openiboot.img3 from the prebuilt tarball into your ‘idroid’ folder.

18. Shut down the iPhone and place it into Recovery Mode: With the iPhone powered off and plugged into the computer via USB, push Hold and Homesimultaneously, and then let go of Hold after the backlight turns on. Continue holding Home until the ‘Connect to iTunes’ image appears on the screen.

19. Run the following commands in Terminal (you’ll need to install libusb-0.1-4 with Synaptics or ‘apt-get’ if you haven’t already):

cd ~/idroid

sudo ./loadibec openiboot.img3

If all goes well, the ‘openiboot’ boot menu should now appear!

20. Use either the volume-control buttons or the Holdbutton to select the second menu option, Console. Tap the Home button to launch it.

A text-mode console should start running on your screen, ending with a ‘Welcome to openiboot’ message.

21. Type sudo ./oibc in Terminal.

The same messages that appeared on the iPhone screen should now appear in Terminal. You should next make a backup of the NOR (the device on which the iPhone’s bootloader is stored) in case something goes wrong, so you don’t brick your iPhone.

22. Type nor_read 0×09000000 0×0 1048576 in Terminal/oibc. This will read the entire NOR into main memory.

23. Type ~norbackup.bin@0×09000000:1048576 in Terminal/oibc. A file will appear in the ‘idroid’ folder called norbackup.bin. Keep this somewhere safe.

The command uploads the NOR to the computer. After you make this backup, you are now free to modify the NOR. The next step installs OpeniBoot onto the NOR, supplanting the existing Apple iBoot bootloader.

24. Type install in Terminal/oibc.

This process may take a few minutes. Wait until the installation-complete message appears.

25. Type reboot in Terminal/oibc and then exit out of it by pressing Ctrl-C.

The OpeniBoot menu should now come up whenever you boot your iPhone. Note that you can uninstall OpeniBoot from oibc with the ‘uninstall’ command. Typehelp for a list of all OpeniBoot commands.

You can still get into the iPhone OS’s recovery mode by holding down Home on the iPhone OS option in the menu until the ‘Connect to iTunes’ image appears (instead of just tapping Home).

You should be finished! Use the OpeniBoot menu to boot Android by selecting that OS from the menu whenever you wish. Unfortunately, no good method to shut down Android exists yet, so the only way to turn it off is to hold down theHold and Home buttons until you’ve forced the phone off.

Check out iDroidWiki for more tutorials and tips on what you can do with your new Android iPhone.

Today I received my order from the nice people over at MoviePeg.

As you can see from the picture the MoviePeg is a little device that look just like a Peg. The Great thing about this peg though is that it will hold your iPhone 3G / 3GS.

The MoviePeg is a simple yet elegant stand that holds your iPhone in both a horizontal and vertical position.

The little device is made of a rubbery plastic type material that slides on the side of your iPhone. It is designed ergonomically to fit the curves of the iPhone, this then allows the phone to sit securely

When using the MoviePeg the cut out that the iPhone slides into is just perfect, it is not to tight and not to loose.

The MoviePeg is available in 6 colours: Black, Yellow, Green, Blue, Pink and Red.

One of the best things about the MoviePeg is that the cost is really low. The device only costs £4.99 plus P+P. MoviePeg ship worldwide.

One of the main reasons to use the MoviePeg is to watch movies without having to hold your iPhone, but this stand can also be used to turn your iPhone into a clock with apps like Night Stand or just to hold your iPhone at your desk.

Check out the vid below to see more…

Click here to view the embedded video.

I think this is a great little stand that is cheap and easy to carry around with an elegant design, and thats why I’m giving its a 4 star rating.

To make way for the iPad release, Apple and the Carriers have got together and doubled the size limit on apps that can be downloaded over the 3G network to 20MB. Previously users were prompted to use a Wi-Fi connection or iTunes to download applications larger than 10MB.

The new limit wasn’t publicly broadcast, but it is felt that the new limit will allow iPad users to download apps that run at a higher res compared to there iPhone sisters and therefore would be a larger file size.

The higher download limit will also apply to audio and video podcasts.

With the Anouncment of the iPad yesterday came the release of the iPhone 3.2 SDK. One thing that has already been noted is the end of restrictions on apps that would normally be forced to depend on a WiFi connection.

This now paves the way for many apps such as Skype and other VoiP applications to finally release versions that can run on a 3G signal, rather than depending on WiFi.

For jailbroken users there has been a way around this for a while now in the form of 3GUnrestrictor, a paid app available from the Cydia store that allowed you to unrestrict apps on a per app basis.

This new move by Apple came to light yesterday when the makers of iCall, an App Store VoiP application, announced that they had now released their unrestricted version of their app.

This now means that the 3G iPad can be used to make phone calls when out of WiFi area. And it’s good news for non-jailbroken iPhone users too.

So after much hoping and lots of jailbraking by iPhone users (esp 2G and 3G users) Apple has approved a new app that allows us to record video on our 2G and 3G iPhones (3GS users your just lucky lol), and it comes in the form of iVideoCamera.

iVideoCamera is available from the app store at a cheap price of just 59p.

Like I said before the app allows you to record video but also save it straight to your camera role (really nice addition I might add). The app also allows you to share you vids via Facebook, Youtube, Vimeo and Twitter.

One thing I love about this app is that the makers Laan Labs have not messed us about in the description of the app they have told us just how it is:

They tell us it records about 3 frames per minute, they tell us we can record for 1 minute only and they say the resolution is low at 160 x 213.

But even though the app has these limitations I still love it, its great to be able to whip out the trusty iPhone and record the kids messing or the dogs in the park and then upload it straight to your favorite social network for all your mates to see.

Have a look at the quality for yourself from a video that I uploaded last night.

Tonight the Dev-Team have released a jailbreak for the 3.1 firmware but with a twist. The Jailbreak is only for the iPhone 2G, 3G and iPod Touch 1G.

The Jailbreak process is just for Mac users at the moment so windows users will have to wait until custom .ipsw files are made and uploaded by kind Mac users or till the Dev-Team release a windows program.

People considering using the Jailbreak will want to read the post by the Dev-Team carefully here.

Below is a quick snippet:

This is the low down on our tools for use with the 3.1 firmware from Apple, please read the whole post in full before attempting anything. Because of changes with Apple’s update techniques this will be a multipart release, starting with the initial release of PwnageTool for Mac OS X – this application supports the iPhone 1st Generation (2G), The iPhone 3G and the iPod touch 1G. NB: THIS DOES NOT SUPPORT THE 3GS OR NEW IPOD TOUCH. redsn0w for Mac OS X and Windows will follow sometime in the near future, please don’t bug us about it – we’ll release when we have something ready.

GOLDEN RULE:If you are using a 3G iPhone with ultrasn0w and rely on ultrasn0w to obtain cellular service, then you should only upgrade to 3.1 with a PwnageTool created .ipsw. – Stay away from Apple’s direct updates as described here and here please get up to speed on the whole subject by reading the information contained in these posts.

If you have an original iPhone (1st generation) then 3.1 unlock works with this PwnageTool release. iPhone 3G users upgrading to 3.1 will need to continue using ultrasn0w with a PwnageTool created 3.1 .ipsw
