Here are some specs of the new 3.1 firmware

• MMS options available on AT&T but the service is not running
• Voice Control available over Bluetooth
• Vibration when moving icons
• “Save as copy” option available for saving videos
• Improved OpenGL and Quartz
• APIs for third party apps that access video
• Modem firmware updated to5.08.01
• Updated AT&T profile to 4.2

The 3.1 update will be available this summer.

Version 3.1.8 is now available from the Rock App.. All trials which have occurred before are being reset as well, so folks are getting a full trial regardless as of this release

Features are the same as before, but now with 3.1.x and iPhone 2G covered as well:

The iPhone 3GS is now supported in PwnageTool 3.1.3, assuming the phone was pwned at 3.0 or 3.0.1 – PwnageTool does not support the 3GS out of the box. If your iPhone 3GS has 3.1 preinstalled and is not Pwned then there is no tested jailbreak solution at the moment.
The iPod 2G is now supported in PwnageTool 3.1.3, assuming the iPod 2G was pwned at 3.0 or 3.0.1 – PwnageTool does not support the iPod 2G with 3.1 software out of the box.

Chronic-Dev are also set to release greenpois0n soon which will be cross platform and not just for mac.

Tonight the Dev-Team have released a jailbreak for the 3.1 firmware but with a twist. The Jailbreak is only for the iPhone 2G, 3G and iPod Touch 1G.

The Jailbreak process is just for Mac users at the moment so windows users will have to wait until custom .ipsw files are made and uploaded by kind Mac users or till the Dev-Team release a windows program.

People considering using the Jailbreak will want to read the post by the Dev-Team carefully here.

This is the low down on our tools for use with the 3.1 firmware from Apple, please read the whole post in full before attempting anything. Because of changes with Apple’s update techniques this will be a multipart release, starting with the initial release of PwnageTool for Mac OS X – this application supports the iPhone 1st Generation (2G), The iPhone 3G and the iPod touch 1G. NB: THIS DOES NOT SUPPORT THE 3GS OR NEW IPOD TOUCH. redsn0w for Mac OS X and Windows will follow sometime in the near future, please don’t bug us about it – we’ll release when we have something ready.

1. GOLDEN RULE:If you are using a 3G iPhone with ultrasn0w and rely on ultrasn0w to obtain cellular service, then you should only upgrade to 3.1 with a PwnageTool created .ipsw. – Stay away from Apple’s direct updates as described here and here please get up to speed on the whole subject by reading the information contained in these posts.
2. If you have an original iPhone (1st generation) then 3.1 unlock works with this PwnageTool release. iPhone 3G users upgrading to 3.1 will need to continue using ultrasn0w with a PwnageTool created 3.1 .ipsw
3. Please read all parts of this post before downloading and using these tools.
4. Read items 1, 2 and 3 again and again.
5. At the bottom of this post are the bittorrent files for the 3.1 capable version of PwnageTool.
6. This app is suitable for the recent 3.1 release.
7. This version of PwnageTool will NOT work for the iPhone 3GS.

PwnageTool WILL ONLY work for Original iPhone (1st Generation), Original iPod touch (1st Generation) and the iPhone 3G.

Saurik, the developer behind Cydia has found a way to downgrade iPhone 3G[S] from 3.1 to 3.0. This process will only work for those who have saved their SHSH to Cydia Server, for more on SHSH, read the complete detail blog post by Saurik here. Also to note here is that while this method will help you downgrade your firmware from 3.1 to 3.0, your baseband will not be downgraded which means you cant unlock it for now.

The Following Guide will help 3G[S] users downgrade from the newly released 3.1 firmware to 3.0.

Step 1: Download iPhone firmware 3.0 for iPhone 3GS.

Step 2:Download and install iTunes 9.

Step 3: Navigate to C:WindowsSystem32driversetc and locate “hosts” file or Mac users can get to “/etc/” directory by going through “Go->Go to Folder” from Finder.

Step 4:Open this “hosts” file in Notepad (for Windows) or TextEdit (for Mac OS X) and add this

(I found that i had to copy the “host” file to my desktop and then make the changes and copy it back to the “etc” folder)

Step 5:Connect your iPhone to your computer and put it in DFU mode by: Hold down the power and home buttons for 10 seconds, letting go of the power button but continuing to hold home until iTunes recognizes the device with the message: “iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. You must restore this iPhone before it can be used with iTunes.”. At this point your iPhone screen should be entirely black.

Step 6:Start iTunes, press and hold shift key and then click on “Restore”.

Select the firmware 3.0 .ipsw file you downloaded in Step 1and restore it. During the restore process, iTunes will throw you 1015 error which will say:

The iPhone “your iPhone” could not be restored. An unknown error occurred. (1015)

Just ignore this error and restart the restoring process from Step 5 to Step 6 until you get the 1015 error again. At this point, simply ignore the error and close iTunes as your device has already been successfully downgraded to firmware 3.0.

Step 7: You can now jailbreak your iPhone which you have downgraded from firmware 3.1 to 3.0.

Please note that by downgrading to firmware 3.0 your 3G[S] will still have the 3.1 baseband and may not be unlockable in the future.

Members of Gioga23 have discovered that a 3G iPhone and iPod touch with the new iPhone OS 3.1 software can also edit video clips, just like you can do on an iPhone 3GS running OS 3.0.

What you need to do is send yourself a video via e-mail. When you receive the e-mail save the video to your device. You can do this by putting your finger on the video until a “Store Video” option appears. Now re-open the video in the library, and you now have the option to change it just like you can do on an iPhone 3GS. While the video is playing tap on the screen and the video editing roll will appear. Drag the beginning and end to the correct position and save the video again.

Both the iPhone Dev-Team and Chronic Dev Team are working on programming applications for the jailbreak for iPhone OS 3.1 and iPod touch OS 3.1.1. The Chronic Dev Team calls their project greenpois0n. This would be able to jailbreak the iPod touch 3G . The Chronic Dev Team claims that the iPod touch is still vulnerable to certain attacks, thats a good sign. The iPhone Dev Team has announced on their blog that they are busy with PwnageTool 3.1, which is obviously intended to jailbreak and unlock iPhone OS 3.1 .

According to The Chronic Dev Team, greenpois0n will initially only work on the iPod touch 3G and iPhone 3GS, but ultimately this tool will work on all iPhone and iPod touch models. They are not going to unlock , for that you will need PwnageTool.

Again, the following steps are for 3GS iPhone owners who accidentally upgraded to OS 3.1 and still have to find out their certificates. To find the certificates enter the following steps:

1. Identify the ECID of your iPhone 3GS.
2. Go to purplera1n.com, paste the ECID in the black input field under the correct logo (Windows or Mac) and press Enter. Note: This only works in Safari or Firefox, not Internet Explorer! Download the file that appears.
3. Send the file by email to ih8sn0wydaz@gmail.com
4. You should get a reply from this addresswith three certificate files.

These three files should make it possible to downgrade to OS 3.0. Saurik is busy making a down-grader, but has posted on twitter that he may start collecting certificate files from iPhone 3G[S]‘s running 3.1 within the next week. On the subject of a jailbreak for  OS 3.1: both the iPhone Dev Team and the Chronic Dev Team are busy, so it shouldn’t be too long until we see a release.

Today Apple announced that the iPhone 3.1 Firmware would be released for all iDevices for free (also iTunes 9 is available today). The firmware is actually LIVE now and available to download.
