Who needs a 3G Version iPad anyways!?

Article by on Wednesday, 19 May 2010

If you’re anything like I am you want things right away. You want the latest and greatest from the technology world and waiting is not an option. Now, you may have gotten an Apple iPad within a few days or even weeks of its release, and since you did, you are now tethered to WiFi hot spots. You don’t have the freedom to roam freely without the luxury of internet use wherever you go!

Well, my friend, I am here to tell you that you don’t have to relinquish your right to use you’re iPhone’s 3G data plan on whatever device you so choose (as long as it’s able to connect to a WiFi network). For the purpose of this article we will be focusing on the iPad.

When I first purchase my iPad, I bought it with the understanding that I would be restricted to using it’s Safari or any Push features only near WiFi networks that were free for me to use. I also understood that because there was a jailbreak for it that there would be an application produced (if it hadn’t been created already) that would allow me to use my iPhone 3Gs’ 3G internet on my iPad. After doing a little bit of research, (no not YouTube surfing- actual research) I realized that my “MyWi” application not only had a “USB or Blue-Tooth” Internet Tethering setting, but it also had a “WiFi Tethering” option.

I used Internet Tethering quite a bit when I didn’t have internet (besides the 3G internet on my iPhone), but once I had a WiFi connection I almost forgot about this application altogether. Now reunited again, I’ve used it quite a bit since I have a WiFi version iPad. The MiWi application is worth the $10 it cost to purchase it. Considering that you pay $360.00 a year for 3G internet for your iPhone and now AT&T / Apple wants another $360.00 a year for your iPad ($30.00 a month). If you only have to pay a one time fee, who wouldn’t want this application? It’s available in Cydia and Rock right now, but you must have a Rock account to purchase the application.

I must warn you though, if you are using a 3G data plan from another carrier besides AT&T, then you should make sure that the 3G data plan you are using does not limit you to a certain about of data your allowed to use. You may be charged a fee for using more data than you pay for. I have used Internet Tethering to watch videos and download movies (Using A LOT of data) and I have never had any extra fees due to using internet tethering. I have a legit sim on AT&T so I have a data plan that is unlimited, be sure that you’re data plan is unlimited as well.

I keep finding more and more tools to be used with my iPad everyday. The jailbreak community is filled with new developers creating new application, themes and tweaks every day. This is the hottest time to be apart of the jailbreak community. I’m excited to be apart of it and I’m looking forward to bringing you news and stories that will help benefit you, our readers.
