iPTT – WorldWide Communication, For Free!!!!

Yesterday i came across an app in the App Store called iPTT – iPushToTalk, which allows you to communicate in a similar way to using a CB radio.

When you start the app, you are presented with a sign-up form asking for a username and email, pretty basic form, with e-mail confirmation.

Now you are ready to start communicating with the world. In the centre of the screen you have a large button which is used to initiate the chat, above this is the current channel you are on and how many people are in the room.

Below the big button, you can switch between public and whisper mode. Whisper mode is a way of communicating one-on-one with a friend whereas the public mode is exactly that, you are talking to the world!

At the very bottom is a horizontal scroll wheel that allows you to change the channel. Channels range from 00.0 – 20.00, and can be set in increments of 0.1, which means there are quite a few channels to choose from. 1.0 is for general topics and seems to be the most popular at the moment.

If you double-tap the area displaying the channel it brings up a list of settings, among these is the ability to ignore users, mute the public or whisper modes, and view a list of channels.

There are areas of this app that could do with some improvement, like the ability to create your own rooms/channels and make them private, allowing you to block out all the “Anonymous” users, and keep it friends only. Maybe some push notifications for paging your friends.

All in all this app is great, it’s alot of fun and best of all it’s absolutely free!!
