What Do I Do After I Jailbreak?
So, you’re new to jailbreaking, welcome to the community! We’re MyGreatiPhone and we’re here to help you with anything you need. At one point, we were all new to jailbreaking, so its only fair that we return the favor. We do recommend that you bookmark our site, that way you can check back with ease. We write articles almost daily, so you’ll always have something new to download or read. If at any time you have questions you can hit any of the writers up on Twitter or Facebook (see the bottom of this article), just read the article first, that way you”ll have some general knowledge, makes it easier to communicate. Well, let’s begin!
The Basics
So if you watched our tutorial on how to jailbreak your iDevice on 4.2.1 or 4.2.6 then you probably have Cydia installed and ready to go. We know you’re looking for something to download, but lets just take a minute to review a couple things
So this is the homescreen you will get everytime you open Cydia, regardless of where you left off. Why? Cydia needs to update every time because new packages have been added since the last time you opened it. It really doesn’t take that long to update, it will depend on your device and your connection. Before you saw this screen you were probably prompted with many updates and Cydia probably asked you to let it back up your SHSH files. If you’re on either of the those screens let Cydia back up your SHSH files and to a “Complete Upgrade”. If want to read more on that (which at some point you definitely should) check out this article, written by us).
That bar at the very top of this screenshot shows that Cydia is reloading itself. The bar at the bottom is also highlighted, it says that I have “2 changes”. This really means that 2 things that I have downloaded from Cydia have been updated by the developer. So all I would do is just tap on changes and upgrade.
Here is the sections tab, shown at the bottom of the screenshot. Here you can download anything and best of all its categorized. One more quick thing and we’ll be downloading something!
Finally, this is the sources tab. Here’s the thing about Cydia, when you open Cydia you’re actually opening a website, that just looks like an app. Try opening Cydia on a non jailbroken device. The bar at the bottom of the screenshots won’t be there. That’s because the device hasn’t been jailbroken yet. So since Cydia is a “website” the sources are also websites, but in the jailbreak world they’re called repo’s. They hold all these packages to install.
Winterboard
This is most likely half the reason why you jailbroke your phone, and we don’t blame you! We’ll start you off with a generic theme, but first you have to download Winterboard. Open up Cydia and follow these steps.
Search –> “Winterboard” without the quotations –> Click on Winterboard –> Install –> Confirm –> Reboot
You’ll notice that when you download Winterboard a bunch of code will come across the screen and that’s ok, because that is what Cydia does everytime you download something. Its just code so dont worry about it, all you have to do is wait for the button at the bottom to appear telling you what to do. Just click the button each time you install something, Cydia does everything for you.
So now your phone has rebooted and Winterboard is on your iDevice. Lets open up Cydia again and download a theme.
If you had an i4 device which is an iPhone 4 or the 4th gen iTouch then you have been dubbed an HD device.
If you have any other device then you have been dubbed and SD device.
Thats because the newer devices utilize a retina display. Every image is double the size but the iPhone 4 can compress it down to a smaller size so it looks like an SD device. This is important because you need to make sure that you download a theme that is compatible with your iDevice. Usually Cydia just says the theme and HD after it. If its an SD theme then it is just the theme name, but not always.
So pending on your device…
SD: Search –> “Alit” without the quotations –> Click on Alit –> Install –> Confirm
HD: Search –> “Anbu HD” without the quotations –> Click on Anbu HD –> Install –> Confirm
*Before you install any theme you can (about 99.99% of the time)
When your theme has install hit the “Return to Cydia” button and close Cydia. Now, head over to Winterboard. Turn on “Summerboard Mode” and then click “Select Themes”. Here you will enable the theme that you downloaded. Its really simple, you just click on the theme. Winterboard will then put a check mark next to it and you’re done. Just hit the home button and your iDevice will respring. It sort of suspends it for less than 10 seconds.
If you downloaded the iDevice compatible theme then your Springboard, which is another name for your homepage, has changed.
So when you’re out of your state of awe, lets move on to a nice tweak you’ll enjoy.
SBSettings
This is a very straightforward download. Head into Cydia and follow this path
Search –> SBSettings –> Click SBSettings –> Install –> Confirm
When the install is done Cydia will prompt you to reboot your device. When your iDevice has rebooted, unlock it, and swipe the status bar (which is the uppermost part of your screen) from left to right. This little menu should pop down.

Your toggles will be different pending on if you are using an iPhone or iTouch. SBSettings is all about making your iDevice easier to use. Example; You want to save battery life? Well instead of going through settings to turn off your WiFi and turn down your brightness, do it from SBSettings. You’ll see what I mean later down the road, SBSettings will become a part of your day to day routine.
Everything Else
Ok, so here is where everything starts to get…different. Cydia really has a lot to offer you with tweaks, themes and, apps. Some are free and some you have to pay for. In the jailbreak world there is the possibility for you to pirate things.
MyGreatiPhone DOES NOT CONDONE PIRACY. If you want to pirate something well thats your choice, not ours. We do feel that you should be aware of it though, so that you make the right decision before you install something.
By now we figure that you can navigate Cydia with ease and read about what you are downloading before you download it. In case you havn’t, everytime you click on a package in Cydia you can scroll down and wait for an explanation of what you are download, you can also scroll down a little further for screenshots, sometime it will say more info instead of screenshots.
With that said, here a list of freedom for your iDevice:
Just a mental note. This list is for newcomers who wish to try out various tweaks and things for their iDevice. This list has been updated as of February 22, 2011. If you stumble on this at a later point in time or a later firmwire there is no promising that it will be compatible at that moment. Just do some quick reading by scrolling down in Cydia and viewing some screen shots.
