Twitter 3.3 for iOS released. Is it a hit or a miss?

Article by on Friday, 4 March 2011

Recently, the twitter application for iPhone, iPod, and iPad was updated via the AppStore, and while the general consensus was that of a negative response, I personally feel that Twitter has taken their official iOS app a step in the right direction. When the twitter application was first released, it had a ton of features that were admittedly a part of the “twitter boom”: the explosion of the social interest in twitter. They had all sorts of features including translation services, URL shortening services, geotagging, now playing features, and other utilities such as address book features, text expanding, so on and so forth – however, most of those features were simply ignored by the average user. These features went on continuously being neglected, and ultimately, twitter listened to its users and got rid of a ton of useless, frivolous features. While adding in some features already available on Twitter for Mac, such as the ability to type in a URL directly into your tweet and have it automatically truncated into a short version with the entire URL taking up only 20 characters no matter how long it is. Unfortunately, to the behest of many and the downright anger of others, features such as TwitLonger are still disabled in the official twitter application, with no mention whatsoever of it being reinstated.

Other additions to the “not so welcome” arena are the annoying little “Trends” translucent bar at the top of the application, and a new “status bar” reflecting the status of your tweet being sent, with respective photos being displayed below.

Ultimately, I personally feel that this is a step in the right direction in regards to “cleaning out the closet” and getting rid of all of the useless twitter functions, and look forward to future updates. While I could also live without the trends bar, those of you on a jailbroken device can easily have this feature “removed” by downloading “Twizzler” from Cydia, by @chpwn. As a matter of fact, we covered that earlier today here, so take some time and read about it real quick.

What are your thoughts, readers? Do you like the update? Love it? Hate it? Sound off in the comments below, or even in the forums!
