Tip of the Day: Private browsing & opening links in the background in Mobile Safari.

Article by on Thursday, 24 November 2011

The Firefox, Chrome or Safari browser on a desktop has had this feature for awhile now, and finally the mobile Safari browser now supports private browsing. Private browsing allows you to browse the Internet without saving any data for the site you’ve visited, so that you don’t leave any digital footprints on your device.

To enable the feature, simply go to Settings->Safari and switch on “Private Browsing“. You will know if it has been activated properly because when you go to Safari, the statusbar will turn black. Private Browsing is available for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch with the standard, stock iOS5 update.

Opening links in the background

Before the release of iOS5, you’ve only been allowed to open links in the same page or as a new page in Mobile Safari up until now. With the release of iOS5, you are now given an option in settings that will allow you to open links in the background.

To enable/use the setting, go to Settings->Safari->-Open Links, and select the “in Background” option. All of the previous options are still there, so if you don’t like it then you can always switch back to the other one just by selecting the “In New Page“. Later when you tap and hold a link on a website, Safari will now show the “Open in Background” option. Enjoy, and feel free to drop by and leave us some feedback!
