How To – Use Celeste Bluetooth Transfer

Article by on Friday, 25 March 2011

I have been seeing a lot of confusion since Celeste was released so I though I would write a small how to guide to using it effectively. As the app is new, there are of course some teething problems. Rest assured the devs are working to iron out the bugs.

Firstly there are a few things you will need to make sure of. You will need to check the following things;

You have a device running firmware 4.2 or above – The developers have decided not to support prior versions at this time in an effort to focus on 4.3 compatibility.

Reboot – It is always best Practice to reboot your device after installing software, especially if Cydia does not prompt you to.

Gremlin – There has been a lot of confusion here, Gremlin is currently included in the Celeste download (this may change at a later date) so no need to download an extra package. As for using it to import songs/video into the iPod app, this is all handled automatically. When you finish receiving a compatible file you will notice a “G” appear in the status bar, this means that Gremlin is importing the file. The icon will disappear when Gremlin completes the import.

iFile – [Update] At the time of this article, iFile has not been updated to fully integrate with Celeste…..YET iFile has been updated to incorporate Celeste and Gremlin, however until such time as Gremlin is released separately, you will have to wait to use this awesome feature. You are still able to send files via Celeste though. Simply hit edit in the top right and select the file you wish to send, you will notice the Bluetooth icon is now available to press, pressing it will bring up 2 choices – “via iFile” and “via Celeste”, choose Celeste and you will be greeted by the device discovery popup.

SBSettings toggle – Celeste comes complete with an SBSettings toggle to turn it on or off. Obviously in order to send or receive files this toggle needs to be ON. If you need to use the built in (crippled) Bluetooth for use with any audio units or car system then turn Celeste off, respring and activate the built in Bluetooth. There have been issues with this that will no doubt be resolved soon.

Sending Songs/Videos - To send a song or video from your iPod library, simply tap and hold to bring up the Action menu. You will see a new choice, “Send” choose this and it will allow you to choose the device to send the file to.

Correct settings on your Mac or PC – After extensive testing and getting A LOT of “Transfer Failed” messages on my MacBook, I played with the settings to get it to work. Sending from Mac to iPhone works just fine, but it seems that when your Mac receives a file, it either wants you to accept it or verify with a passcode. This is where the issues start.

In order to get a smooth transfer, you will need to right click on the Bluetooth status bar icon and choose “Open Bluetooth Preferences”. Next choose the device that you have paired, i.e your iPhone. Next you need to click on “Share Setup” at the bottom, this will open up some more options. This is where we need to make the changes. Make sure that both “File Sharing” and “Bluetooth Sharing” options are ticked. Click on “Bluetooth Sharing”.

For the option “When receiving items” choose “Accept and Save” from the drop down. Also untick the “Require Pairing” option.

As I don’t have a windows machine so I cannot confirm where the settings are or how similar they are, but if you choose the equivalent then you should be good to go. This should solve any issues you were facing when trying to send files to your Mac or PC. Hopefully the developers can resolve this issue as it does leave your Mac/PC open to any Bluetooth transfers, safe OR malicious.

Where do my files go? – the beauty of Celeste is that everything is done for you. Received photos are put in the camera roll, music and videos are imported into the iPod app, in iFile you can access other received files at var/mobile/Received.

Hopefully you found this of some help, and remember, as with all new releases – there will be bugs. The developers will be working on these bugs so be patient.

This guide is non-exhaustive and may be added to. Please leave any suggestions or additions in the comments.
