Summary of Apple Conference – 4th October 2011. iPhone 4S, iPod Touch, iPod Nano, iOS5, iCloud.
After all the rumors and speculation, we finally know what is coming!
Firstly. iOS5.
iOS5 is a new operating system from Apple which will include iCloud, new notification system and iMessage – Apples iOS based messaging system. We’ve spoken about this a lot so I won’t spend a lot of time on it, however we do have a few new things.
- Family & Friends. We had heard about this before, but a lot of people have brushed over it. Well it exists. It’s basically an app for you to find out where your family and friends are at that time. It has privacy controls and you can tell it not to show where you are at particular times and it is all up to the user what you want shared and when. Very nice feature.
- Cards. Cards allows you to create and mail beautiful cards right from your iPhone or iPod touch. Apple post it, adds their own little own stamp on to it. It’s basically a personalised Moonpig.
- iTunes Match. Part of the iCloud stuff, iTunes Match scans and matches your library against Apples 20m songs. If it doesn’t find anything, it will upload it. So you are always synced with your music and can restore without a wire.
- iCloud. Basically, back ups and restores without any wires. Apps, Music, Settings… everything appears in iCloud.
- Wireless Syncing. With new iTunes that will be released, you can wirelessly sync your device with OS X. Just like you would with a cable, but over WiFi.
Out 12th October.
There is a new iPod Touch released. White version too with a price decrease and a 64GB version.

iPod Nano released. 8GB for $129, and 16GB for $149 available today.
Looks like Software update also released for it. New clock faces for people who wear it as a watch and built in fitness, so no more need for sensors.
iPhone 4S:
- New Camera. 8MPX as rumored. Wider lens (f2.4). Sensor closes or opens where needed. 5 lens elements.
- Dual-core CPU, 2x as fast at CPU tasks. Also dual-core graphics. Up to 7x faster in the previous iPhone. A5 chip.
- Two antennas. One to send data, one to receive. Makes call quality even better and data speeds 2x faster.
- HD 1080p video
- Siri – the new speech recognition system
- Front facing camera still VGA
- AT&T, Verizon and Sprint.

iPhone 4S available on 14th October in the UK and US, 28th Elsewhere.
