O2 Unlocks iPhones For Free!

Article by on Thursday, 26 November 2009

O2_set_to_make_announcement_about_iPhone_large From the 10th of November, O2 announced that customers within their iPhone contract can have their iPhones unlocked for free as long as they continue with the remaining term of their contact.

Customers who bought their iPhones on Pay as you Go can have their phones unlocked after 12 months for a one off fee of £14.69 (which will be taken from their airtime)

To get your iPhone unlocked you have to register here on O2′s unlocking form. They then say that your phone will be unlocked within 14 days. They will send you an sms to tell you that you can unlock by connecting your phone to iTunes.

I have done this myself after always having an iPhone unlocked by the dev-team but now it has just got even easier for UK customers. The only snag I ran into is that you have to have your O2 SIM in the phone to be able to get the message allowing iTunes to unlock it.

This is an unusual thing for a carrier to do in the UK (unlock phones for free and while in contact) so O2 must have really pee’d off Apple (probably for taking the Palm Pre exclusively).

All I have to say on the matter is Thank you O2 and thank you Apple. I can now use my Orange SIM legit.
